I built up a table top layout for Fallujah 02 and had planned on using Ambush Alley. Game played fine but now Ive got an 11 year old Young Marine that wants to get in on the action. The semi-simultaneous stuff is just too much for him to grasp.

Can you guys suggest a rules set suitable for the period but a bit more conventional and easier for a novice gamer to manage?

Take a look at Flying Lead from Ganesha Games. Straightforward and easy to pick up.

FiveCore by Nordic Weasel

I'll second 5core. Great introductory game.

I also rate Fivecore but you could take a look at Rory Crabb's Fire team: Modern rules, which would be ideal for what you are planning:

Ok, Ill give them a look. Chief among the priorities would be the ability to represent the elements of the fighting there. Breaching, clearing buildings, bulldozers, arty and air cover, hidden movement of insurgents etc.

Ok, Five Core doesn't look like what we are looking for. Individual stats and an RPG feel is cool but not for this project, not now. Something more tactical, less heroic that allows the use of real world military tactics would suit my boy and his unit better.

While there is nothing for ultra moderns the Junior General site has tons of stuff for young gamers, you might look at the Ia Drang scenario for really simple rules that you could convert to use for Fallujah. Best of all it is free.

May I suggest a look at my other game: No End in Sight?

Its geared specifically to "grimy" infantry fighting with a heavy emphasis on suppression and pressure.

Its aimed at platoon fighting but you can scale down easy enough.

If you're uncertain if it'd fit, pop me an email or PM.

I enjoy most games by Two Hour Wargames. Definitely suitable for a young, new gamer

Maneuover Group promotes use of real tactics but it is team based,(typicaly 3 to 6 men) not sure what level you want. Definitely avoids the heroic/hysteria much beloved by Holywood.
