Came across this in the news today and thought I would share. The project to restore things to 1860s conditions at the Gettysburg Battlefield continue this week with a controlled burn on Little Round Top. I heard about this on the radio this morning and found a news clip. link |

It always bothered me that it wasn't kept historically. A few years before the battle farmers cleared it off for firewood |

If you haven't been to Gettysburg in a few years I strongly urge a new visit! They have cleared thousands of post-battle trees and the views and vistas are a LOT different than what we've been used to. Understanding some sections of the battle become much easier now. |

Agree. I was there April 2 and visited the Zeigler Grove area where the old visitors center and the cyclorama were. Amazing changes. They are erecting 4' high stone walls. A little too neatly for my tastes, but like nothing I've seen there in 50 years. I am used to the low, knee high walls and "fences". These walls are intimidating like the one at Fredericksburg. Based on old photographs. Eye opening. Waiting for something to be done on Culp's Hill. I understand it was clear of brush. Nothing but brush now. |

If anybody is looking for an excuse to go to Gettysburg… The Gettysburg Toy Soldier Show is Sun. 04/23 at the Eisenhower Resort. Here is a link to the Warhorse Miniatures site with the details listed. Been to 2 or 3 of these and they are fun and worth the trip. link |

Any of you guys with more than a casual interest in the Battle of Gettysburg and who haven't been there in a few years would probably enjoy seeing the improvements, especially those that have been done in the Ziegler's Grove area. thestoneman: It is my impression that the 4' high stone walls you refer to are part of the commemorative walkway that will run from the cemetery entrance on Taneytown Rd. to Hancock Ave. in the Ziegler's Grove area. I was informed that these walls are not meant to replicate stone walls that were there during the battle. If anyone has any more information regarding these walls I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Thanks very much!!! John Miller |

John Miller. It seems there are several sides to the story of the stone walls. link link The second article supports the higher stone walls (first photo referencing wall "B" on the color map). While the author of the first article is not a fan. As I said in my previous post, they are done too neatly for me. Try and find photos of Meade's HQ area by Gardner. They were used to support building higher walls. Also, you are right, there is some commemoration work being done, but as it is all under construction now and unmarked it is confusing. I hope I have not made it more so. |

thestoneman: Thanks for getting back to me. For years I was under the impression that restoring the battlefield to its' 1863 condition was the goal of the Park Service. I thought the stone walls were knee high at the time of the battle, (most of them anyway, of course there could have been exceptions). The appearance of these walls confused me so I asked a Park Ranger at the visitor center desk a few week ago and he informed me that the 4' walls were not necessarily historic to the era. The visitor information desk was crowded so I didn't get to go into details with him at the time and, as a result, I don't know what the Park Service's intention is. I am going to go back to Gettysburg in early May so I will attempt to find out more at that time. I thank you very much for posting those links. It appears we are not the only ones who are confused about this. John Miller PS: I will let you know by posting my finding here on the TMP site. |

I have always been a supporter of the restoration work at Gettysburg and Antietam. There has been some pushback from the folks who cannot stand the thought of a tree being cut. Who knew there were so many Druids interested in weighing in on battlefield restoration. |
