Built some 15mm terrain for a TMPer, and got me back on to an old project idea: 15mm Boxer Rebellion

I can crank out the terrain, buildings, walls, barricades, etc. I figure modular pieces that can make a varied combo of enclosures, with some bigger Legation type buildings with floors and interior for 1:1 individual based TSATF type games.

Figures? I assume I would want 10+ 20 man units of Boxers, Chinese Regulars, artillery, Kansus, etc.

Also 20 man units of US , British, Japanese German, Russian and such units, plenty of civilians and some armed civilian units. Also Chinese civilians.

I figure Blue Moon can supply civilians?

Who else? Any developments since I last pondered this era?

Old Glory 15s has packs, but they have NO pictures. Are their Boxer figures good?

Anyone else make them, and have a web site that I can order from?

Thanks

Are you REALLY BACK, Smokey ?? Or is that also the work of the bug?

Buckeye AKA Darryl09 Apr 2017 2:52 p.m. PST

Is Frontier UK truly in business? I thought all Frontier was kaput.

Yeah, they are dead…try going to this:

Wow, that is some echo! :)

Smokey I'd love to see pictures of that terrain.

You might also look at Blue Moon's Old West civilian packs; I am sure most of the men would work just fine.

capncarp09 Apr 2017 4:58 p.m. PST

Nah, I think Smokey's post bounced off Pluto and flashed back to TMP.

Smokey Roan09 Apr 2017 8:53 p.m. PST

Yes 79th, BM has the civilians down pat.

I just wish I could SEE OG 15s Boxer range.

How in the Bleeped text can they STILL not have pics of their figures?

I have tons of OG 15s in other ranges, but I need to see their Boxer figs. I dont want the relief expedition forces, I want the Peking defenders.

Hafen von Schlockenberg10 Apr 2017 7:52 a.m. PST

I believe the Steves have had some health problems in the past couple of years. Plus there was a move.

The major impediment, though, has to be the vast number of figures involved--photographing them all would be a major undertaking.

Not that I disagree with you, Smokey--I'd like to see a better effort from Old Glory 25s,too. But there again, similar hordes of figures.

The gold standard on photography of a miniature line is Miniature Service Center,IMO.

Henry Martini10 Apr 2017 8:22 a.m. PST

I don't actually own any, but I've seen photos of the OG 15s Boxers in years gone by and they appeared to be well-detailed, chunky, dynamic figures in the usual big 15s size.

Be patient until Historicon ????????

Buckeye AKA Darryl10 Apr 2017 3:08 p.m. PST

Sounds like a tease, Russ! A new line, or pictures from OG15s…which would be amazing in its own right!

However, if there is a range of Blue Moon coming…yep, going to grab some of those!

Now if we can just have someone make 15mm Chinese Legation and native buildings!

jhancock10 Apr 2017 4:33 p.m. PST

OG15s Boxer Rebellion are good. Same funky action poses as ACW and Napoleonics. I have some of the Germans repurposed for East Africa in WW1. Send me PM if you want images.

Smokey Roan11 Apr 2017 3:33 p.m. PST

I figure, a compilation of TSATF with Chris Feree's excellent 1:1 15mm Rorkes Drift and Isandhlwna rules (and they are free)

TSATF in general, and for firing by units, movement, turns, etc, and Chris' more detailed, specific siege type melee (which is TSATF style, with more modifiers) and Chris has really neat detailed mechanics for fighting/entering windows, walls, roofs, setting fires, etc.

No manuever game like a relief expedition scenario. Defenders walled in and surrounded, with attackers all over.

Moving your small defender units of 5 or ten figs, rushing reserves to critical areas, abandoning areas and retreating, protecting civilians, getting wounded to the horsepistol, etc is the name of the game.

The key is a cool compound, with provisions for walls and buildings taking damage from artillery, burning, etc.

Will build a Tartar Wall style side, and lots of smaller walls, buildings and barricades connected to it.

Lots of drahma, definitely Charlton Heston/Ava Gardner style Hollywood.

Boxers will have a big disadvantage in melee, attacking walls and such, but there will be LOTS of them.

Henry Martini: Chunky, bold figures in 15mm, for individually based games, is very good! Chunky figs dont break at the ankles after lots of handling :)

Blue Moon civies from their Horror Range are PERFECT. I can also use some of their figs from other periods , I have lots. A Lot of Old West figs work, as do their Colonials.

My ONE regret? My massive TSATF "Shadow Over Innsmouth in Fort Pierce Florida circa 1880" game, that is half completed, will still be on deck…one of these days….I'll do it.

BTW, I did 3 Massive, Long, Inetrnet tutorials on how to crank out museum quality 15mm buildings, if you remember. Did Boxer rebellion buildings due to the fact they used neat roof and detail techniquues Sudan and Old mexico buildings didnt have. LOL! The 3 pieces have been sittig on one of my computer system woofers (speakers) for 2 years. Looking at them now :)

Irregular Miniatures offer troops in that era. They're a trifle rough sometimes, but paint up quite nicely. They also sell individual castings, which is always nice.

Smokey Roan13 Apr 2017 6:12 p.m. PST

Yep Tony. I have taken the plunge, and have lots of Irregular figs in 15mm. (mostly needed individual figures and Ashantis and such plus character figs.) Love them.

But the irregular online ordering and such……US distributor needed Stat!

Them and GRF are my go to for odds and ends type figs,

badwargamer15 Apr 2017 11:13 a.m. PST

Hi. I have shared you frustration about the lack of pics of the 15mm old glory figs. I will try and get some pics up of the ones that I have…but am busy for a few days.

Some notes on the packs. The artillery one has a mixture of old pieces and modern Krupp style guns.
The imperial infantry is a mixture of the 'Kansu brave' style and modernised chinese with a cap.

If you are after older style Imperial Chinese then I can recommend the Khurasan minitaures Manchu range and also the Irregular miniatures range. The latter aren't the best sculpts but paint up fairly well and mix ok with all.

The range by Lancashire are excellent, but generally much bigger than all the other figures. He has a comprehensive range though and if you used them for the majority it would work fine.

I have the OG15mm Boxers. Chinese, Japanese, Bersaglieri and civilians.
If I could figure out how to post photos, I'd put some up.
Very Nice figures.
The Lancashire Games Boxer Rebellion figures are much bigger, closer to 20mm and don't mix well.
(Not well enough for me)
There was a game and article in Miniature Wargames years ago called 55 minutes at Peking.
How to play the siege in an hour. Excellent multiplayer game. Lots of fun. Recommended. I could put up more info if you are interested.
(I'll go dig it out.)

So, Old Glory 15s Boxers – decent figures (own quite a few though may have the standard sharp undercuts – haven't started painting them yet – that made painting OG15s a bit of a pain; painted up fine, just a pain to paint).

Lancashire decent but a bit static – and very big but they have civilians that no one else makes (but see below).

If Cell Mate is still around, much smaller and thin (only source for Red Lantern Boxers so far).

Frontier, if they were still around, were nice figures in a unique style – enjoy what I have or touched (painted for someone else, all ACW). Sadly, I did't get any of their Boxer stuff.

But…if Old Glory 25s/Blue Moon are about to release a range in 15/18mm (see Russ' tease above), I'd wait for sure, Smokey. If their other ranges are any indication, they'll be offering the most comprehensive range for the Boxer Rebellion ever released (in any scale) and, I suspect, with buildings to go along with it, including the Tartar Wall. Search back into Russ' posts over the last several years for a discussion on the topic.

I already have a significant collection of Boxer figures and I just might be replacing the lot with Blue Moon figures if/when they arrive. Especially looking forward to seeing what civilian figures get released – both European and Chinese. If they do release those, opens up a lot of Pulp type options for a lot of us. And, frankly, probably the same will be true for the Legation forces, adding to pulp options.

Historicon isn't that far away. Wait, sir. Unless some disaster strikes, I think you'll be very glad you did. Russ and company and Blue Moon have made the biggest difference in 15/18 mm in many decades and have, in my opinion, the finest and most versatile ranges available. (and often times dwarfing what you might get from anyone else in any scale as far as diversity of figures and pretty often the only place you can get certain ranges.)

My only complaint with Blue Moon/OG25s is they just don't have a range of animals, domestic and wild, for decorating my gaming tables. But, heck, that's a personal gaming idiosyncrasy of mine. But they sure make photos more interesting. And games, too.

badwargamer16 Apr 2017 9:44 a.m. PST

Ah…the fabled blue moon pending boxer range….Have been hoping for these for years. Also would love it if the old glory range did smaller packs so you could get individual lines rather than the mixed up bulk packs.
I've managed to resurrect my old photobucket account so will try and take some painted pictures of some troops later in the week.

badwargamer30 Apr 2017 5:05 a.m. PST

Yep it's great..better than the pic looks. One of a range from China. Some type of ply rather than mdf so the hull bits curve
Took a bit of work to waterline but love these models. Plenty of detail yet perfect for gaming

Smokey Roan30 Apr 2017 10:03 a.m. PST

Great stuff!

Man, I should get a commission or something from Blue Moon/OG25! : )

The announcement we've all (okay, a lot of us) have been waiting for:
