… of the greatest WWII stories never told. "One of World War II's greatest untold stories began on April 8, 1942 when Lt. Gen. Jonathan Wainwright, the commander of the U.S. Army in the Philippines, ordered the evacuation of military and civilian nurses to the island of Corregidor. A month later, Corregidor fell and 77 American nurses were captured by the Japanese, becoming the largest group of female prisoners of war…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Actually, Tango, it's been covered several times, including the contemporary movie tear- jerker, "So Proudly we Hail". |

With Veronica Lake!
Huh. My Auto-Dolt may be starting to make sense--kept trying to change "Veronica" to "Very nice"! |

And don't forget "Cry Havoc" with one of the loveliest female ensemble casts ever. Same basic story, but this one based on a stage play. TVAG |

Tiny, though -- 4'11"--98 lbs. That's one reason why she was a good match for Alan Ladd, at 5'6'--she was the only actress they didn't need to put him on a soap box for. |

Not for Frederic March, reportedly. And Raymond Chandler called her "Moronica". A short career,a sad end. Diagnosed with mental problems at a very young age, left untreated by her classic stage mother(who later sued her). No wonder she was difficult. I still love her, though. |

BTW(and way off topic)--as a gauge of her popularity in the mid'forties--if you've ever seen Val Lewton's sequel to "Cat People", 1944's "Curse of the Cat People",the little girl, Ann Carter, was cast because she looked like a diminutive Veronica Lake:
Interestingly, two years earlier,at age 5,she had a small part as Veronica's daughter, in "I Married a Witch". |
