I just acquired these rules and was wondering if there was a discussion group out there.

…Interim 7.62mm Infantry Rifle.

"According to a recent article on Soldier Systems, the US Army is considering an "interim" switch back to the 7.62mm caliber in standard infantry rifles. Eric Graves of the site lays out a reasonable overview of the situation on the ground, and what sort of …"

Makes sense, especially when fighting against people who use VBIEDs, and suicide vests.

Nice to be able to reach out and touch someone, when they can't do the same to you, and to put them down, permanently.

A battle rifle will do that.

I suspect they should also consider producing carbines, and/or SMG-like weapons, for fighting in cities, where short barrels, and heavy firepower are a plus, close-in.

I've used both the M16 and M14. 7.62 is more powerful than 5.56, but generally either will kill you. The M4 being shorter than the M16 is good for urban warfare/closed terrain.

But again both the M16 and M14 have a Max Effective Range of @ 460m. But that is based on both using standard "open iron" sights. Not the Max Range of the round. 7.62 – 3750m … 5.56m – 2500m, IIRC …

Put a scope on either you can be more effective at longer ranges. In the ROK our Snipers had M 21s, an "accurized" M 14 with scope, 3x9 IIRC …

"Interim switch"? Does that mean we taxpayers must reequip the armed forces with a new rifle for just a short time, then reequip them again with yet another?

On the articles conclusions, I am in full agreement.

Do what the Russians do, have a designated marksman and give them a 7.62mm to use. Problem solved.

Striker07 Apr 2017 1:51 p.m. PST

have a designated marksman
Weren't they doing this already?

Not with a 7.62 to my knowledge, but them I am just a civvy reading posts on Ultra-Modern…

Have to say that when hunting my choice is the '06 or the PSL – both 7.62. One of these days the L1A1 will go into service again.

But then elk are a bit larger than the average military target.

I thought I saw a jazzed up m14 in pics and they were calling the guys "DM-designated marksman". Maybe an ad-hoc thing?

AFAIK … the only "jazzed up" M-14 was the M-21 … But that was a long time ago … old fart

Take a look at the H&K 308 or 417.

Or for that matter get those old Belgians FAL's out and re vamp the gas- chamber. That was the only thing slightly wrong with it but only of you didn't take proper care of it. 158 countries used it so….

You really need the 7.62 again. If it was up to me all military rifles would be in .338 Lapua
