Th first question's answer is definitely wrong

Nothing really significant happened on either Jan 5 or July 14 1914

July 28 1914 was the date of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand which most see as the immediate cause of the war but not the war itself

Aug 7 marked the arrival of the BEF in France and the first French attack on the Western Front.

IMO the most logical date for the start of WWI was July 28, 1914 the day Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia

12/15, confess I'm happy with that as I don't touch the subject too much. Agree with what has been written about the problem of a start date though.
