Throw me some rules suggestions for a company sized game that aren't terribly complicated but still give a good results that aren't overly abstracted.

Are there rules for company sized (1 or 2 companies) that are 1 tank = 1 tank and 1 infanty stand = 1 squad?

Iron Cross seems to work pretty well for your description. Squad leader in miniature. Crossfire (admittedly my favorite but lots of abstraction in them).
Battlegroup Panzergrenadier Deluxe might be the perfect fit for your description but they're pricey.

The exact scale you request, has a campaign section and scenario generator included.

You have to eyeball the stats a bit.

Panzergrenadier Deluxe really seems to suit what you are looking for.

Unfortunately they are a bit expensive unless you can get a second hand copy. This is a real shame because if they were more competitively priced I think they would be a lot more popular.

Enough detail to differentiate different army doctrines and troop types. Interesting and simple system with opportunities to interupt/react to an opponent.

Command and Control is really good and adds a lot of flavour.

The two previous editions are Battlegroup Panzergrenadier I and II which may be cheaper and easier to get get hold of on ebay.

On the rules forum there's a great AAR of a large demo game to give you an idea of basing.

I can vouch for Five Core's Company Command. I've been really enjoying playing it and love the options in it for customizable game play. It hits the sweet spot.

There's solo options included in there.
It's more as a set of guidelines than a "2HW style" AI system, but a lot of my players are solo so it must work alright.


I'd be remiss in not also suggesting Crossfire for this scale (and Company Command is intended specifically to be compatible with Crossfire scenarios), though I dunno If its easily available anywhere currently.

Five Core is a favorite of mine. Straight forward combat, morale, and movement mechanics, with a cool activation mechanism that doesn't let you do everything you want, but doesn't make you a spectator. It forces a lot of decision points, and you've really got to keep focus of effort lest you end up allowing the enemy to dictate the pace and action.

I think the activation system lends itself to solo play; I've logged around two hundred batreps now using the 5Core system. It's proven incredibly resilient and eminently modifiable, so you can tweak to get exactly the feel you're looking for out of any period, echelon of command, and tactical situation.

As above, 5Core CC, Crossfire and maybe Iron Cross.

Fireball Forward is on the more complex side, partly due to the language used to describe the interleaved activation sequence and I hate all the weird dice combos with a passion.

Infantry fire resolution in Iron Cross is excessively confusing, why not just throw two dice and be done with it?

You could try Ostfront, simple and deadly and made for large battles. We often get 2 games in during the time it takes others to play half a battle.

Crossfire and FiveCore are both very good. They represent the ebb and flow of battle and put you in the shoes of a Company Commander.

Commanding a company makes it a skirmish scale, or each element equals a section of about 4 men or 1 vehicle/gun. The old WRG Armour & Infantry rules can give you a reasonable rule and are simple, however the rules structure makes it hard to learn. This Video‌ provides an overview of all the rules I am familiar with at this scale, or the next scale up which is squad scale, allowing you to command two companies and placing you in the position of battalion commander.
