Seems something has happened to my topic so I'm starting the same question and hopefully without bugs! Hello, I recently purchased some of Steve Barber's Honved line advancing. I like the uniform, but don't know what colours I need to paint their coat and trousers. Please assist if you can with some Vallejo colours ideas. Thanks, GH |

Don't know about Vallejo colors but basically it's a chocolate brown coat with red piping with light blue (I would suggest a 'coral' blue) pants and a red stripe. Alternately, you could paint them in a mid blue coat with black piping and grey pants with a red stripe. Remember – google is your friend: link You should also try to get a hold of "The Hungarian Army 1848-49" by Ralph Weaver and published by Caliver Books or "The Honved Army, 1848-49" by Gyozo Somogyi, which is a shorter version of his "A Szabadsagharc Hadserege" – which can be found as well if you're lucky. |

I agree, the Somogyi book has loads of colorful drawings and the sheer variety of Hungarian uniforms is incredible. I've painted my 18mm Hungarian army using that book as my main source. |

Thank you for all responding. The link is wonderful. My search on google does not always come up with this type of search results. I do have the book. My personal issue is translating colours from uniform into paints to be used. Will continue with the painting palette. Thank you, GH |

GH, You need to remember that before the invention of modern dyeing processes, colors had a tendency to 'bleed' or fade over time – so the pants, for instance, the 'coral' blue pants could be anything from a light blue to a deep, rich light blue – it's really up to you. Personally, I have a tendency to paint my figures in shades 2 times brighter than what the reference books say – so, for the Hungarians, I might use a 'bambi' brown mixed with a hint of red or brunt umber. I paint only in 15mm but I like the look. Also, the Hungarians, while great at raising an army had supply problems (like all armies), so you could mix up the colors of the pants – especially for units that were considered 'elite' because they were constantly engaged in combat. It seems that the coat remain constant and for some units – the pants did too, especially the 'White Hats' and a few others. Just use what you think is best. |
