I see CBS Sunday Morning is doing a story on a dive off the US coast:

Should also later be on line.

That's not too far from where I live.

There are several sunken U-boats off the North Carolina
coast. I think the closest might be U-701, which is
about 10 miles off Avon, North Carolina and which may
be 'excursion' dived by contacting Divehatteras.

They have a website with pix of the wreck and an extensive
narrative of the U-boat's patrol career, wartime
exploits, sinking and survival of a small portion of
the crew, including the commander.

Part of the story is that the U-boat and its victim of the same day sinking lay just 250 yds from each other.

Was it the same U-boat that sank itself?

No, this one was taken down with depth charges and Kingfisher floatplanes. All the crewman (45) on the U Boat died, all the crewmen on the cargo ship the U Boat torpedoed survived.

I know a guy who has dove on the U-571 multiple times. It is at the limits of recreational diving depth, so you don't need a submersible to get to it, but the water is rough and you need to be an experienced diver.

This is U-576. Interesting that they had a 93-year-old Merchant Marine vet on the research vessel.

You can watch it here now:
