Besides TSR's "Battlesystem" and Two Hour Wargames "Rally Round the King", are there any other games available that address the type of combat that involves larger units and magic? If so, are at least some of the units able to fight in a disciplined matter, like say those of Imperial Rome and some of her opponents? I just started reading Jim Butcher's "Codex Alera" series, which, for those who are unaware, descendants of one or more of the "vanished" Roman legions find themselves on another world, where the Romans use a form of magic. At any rate, anyone know of a game (or games, for that matter) beyond the two I mention that fit at least generally along these lines? |

If you can wait a couple of weeks, then Sword & Spear Fantasy will be ideal for this sort of battle. The rules are currently with the printers and will be available soon. These rules are a development of Sword & Spear, which is a set of rules for large ancient & medieval battles. You can find out more about them here: link On my forum there's a section for the fantasy rules where you can read some battle reports to get an idea of the kind of battle that can be played. link |

I am planning on using Dux Bellorum with a few tweaks. Doing it in 6mm on 80mm wide bases, ut I will also try out RRTK (owned itf or years and never played) |

War of the Ring from Games Workshop Dragon Rampant, with a few tweaks would work |

To use Dragon Rampant I would double the number of figures in a unit. This will allow more meaningful distinctions in the terms of hits a reduced model unit can take. |

@Marshal Mark: Do you a US distributor for your games? Sword & Spear looks interesting, so I expect the fantasy will, too. Does anyone know of a US distributor for War in the Age of Magic, from Peter Pig? Thanks! |

Have you looked at Mighty Armies, Crusader's Legions Of Battle, or even Chipco's Fantasy Rujes? |

I (of course) recommend A Game of Fire and Ice which features a mass combat system (army level). It has a fully developed fantasy component (and can also do straight medieval historical). In addition it has a campaign system based on the War of the Roses but easy to convert to Roman Civil Wars. Available through WarGames Vault. (Next expansion will cover the "Old Hammer" world). Man. Might Armies, Legions of Battle and A Game of Fire and Ice all look good. I couldn't find much info on getting a copy of the Chipco rules, though. |
