I have a set of figures of a 1940's film crew. Since my daughter works in media I am painting it up for her. I was hoping to base them nicely on wood. But how can I get the figures base to blend into the floor without having to remove the base. Or should I just make it an outdoor shoot and put them on grass?

The latter.

One approach would be to set them where you want them, draw a line around the base, and use a Dremel to cut away inside the lines you've just drawn. Then glue the bases flush with the surface of the wood. I don't know how handy you are, or if you own a Dremel or not.

I would make a small scenic diorama including the figures and base the whole thing on a nice wooden base.

I would put the whole crew on a 2"or 3" washer and base it up the same as your WW2 stuff, and have her run the film crew as a team for skirmish gaming.

You can also spackle the base.

As 79thPA says; Spackle, Plasticine, plastic wood, Plaster of Paris, literally anything can be used to build up the surround. Smeared and smoothed, paint it black/grey for tarmac or concrete
