Arent't these minis meant to bend their arms so they make realistic rowers? In the position as delivered they are certainly unable to row – more important: wouldn't it be better to bend them before painting??

Perhaps the oarsmen are preparing to pull their oars in and up. I seem to recall such a move from Kirk Douglas's movie, The Vikings. In which case the oars will stand straight out, parallel with the water.
