…and an All-New Trilogy. "Alien remains one of the best sci-fi/horror films ever made, even almost 40 years later. It not only launched a massive (and continuing) film franchise and Sigourney Weaver‘s career, it also firmly established Ridley Scott as a competent director with a strong grasp of story, character, and ambiance. And while it can be argued that Scott's efforts to reclaim the "Alienverse" as his own have fallen short so far with Prometheus, there are high hopes for the upcoming sci-fi sequel, Alien: Covenant. That film will pick up following the events of Prometheus which left only Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and the android David (Michael Fassbender) alive/functioning to carry on the story. But thanks to Scott's comments in a new interview, it looks like Covenant might not be a direct sequel after all but rather something a little further on down the line. Fandango sat down with Scott to talk about all things Alien, and the chat revealed some interesting insight into the shared Alienverse that's still in progress, like the plan for the next film after Covenant, followed by an entirely new Alien trilogy…" Main page link Amicalement Armand

Interesting -- the article quotes Ridley Scott saying, "we raise some very interesting questions about the position and possibility of AI against human condition, and it crosses into the zone of apartheid — kind of like how Roy Batty was treated like a second class citizen." Ya know what? I'd MUCH rather see a movie with the backstory of Roy Batty than the retread he's doing of the Aliens-verse. |

Yea, Roy no doubt lived an interesting "life". AIs are now eligible for "citizenship"? Seems rather daft to me, though I've heard of at least one nation/region pushing for "human rights for robots/AIs", so perhaps to some that's not daft at all. Actually, IIRC, they may have even been granted them. That's definitely daft to me. What next, "rights" for my next automobile purchase, or computer? Of course, then your "Android" and/or other mobile phone will be wanting them too. No doubt, they'll be wanting some Fridays, and ALL evenings and weekends off, and holiday/sick pay too. |

The problem with the Alien franchise is that the studios didn't seem to know where to take it. Alien was a great start and Aliens was a fantastic sequel. At this point we see a definite trend. First it's a cargo ship, then a small out-of-the-way colony, so the next logic step would have been to take it up a notch and play out Ripley's nightmare: a xenomorph infestation breaking out on Earth. That would have been both frightening and epic! We didn't get that. Instead we got the atrocity that was Alien^3 followed by the ret-conned meh of Alien Resurrection. (I refuse speak of the blasphemy of the AvP movies or Prometheus.) |

I'd like to strip Ridley of his rights to mess up stuff, his directorship days have definitely long gone by its sell-by date. Love the button pushing politics words he uses, snark. I think personaly the dude never even read 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'. |

And regarding AI having "time off" there is already talk to tax robotics-using companies "extra" for not having enough human employees. |

Remember the moment you heard Ridley Scott namecheck Roy Batty in an "Alien" trailer, because…. …the two franchises coexist in the same universe! The DVD extras for "Prometheus" include an extract from Weyland's journal, describing Tyrell as his mentor. Ridley's openly referencing this makes me think he's at least toying with the idea of exploring a crossover. |

Prometheus was a good movie. This is now a popular opinions thread. |
