… of Independence.

"The article examines the use of combat dogs during the Leclerc-Rochambeau expedition to Haiti (1802-1803), an episode often mentioned in histories of the Haitian Revolution but never studied in scholarly fashion. The dogs, purchased in Cuba by Louis de Noailles at the instigation of expeditionary leader Victoire Leclerc, could theoretically have assisted French forces in counterinsurgency operations, but their actual military contribution proved very limited. There are only three documented instances of their use, all of which showed the dogs to be inefficient or even dangerous to their own side. Contrary to popular perception, the dogs' secondary use as a psychological weapon of terror under Donatien de Rochambeau also proved a failure. Even when the dogs were given such horrific tasks as devouring rebel prisoners, they failed to diminish Haitian rebels' will to fight and in fact prompted even more defections and reprisals. The dogs' historical relevance thus lies within the realm of public memory: as symbols of the horrors of imperialism and as a powerful argument for Haiti's right to self-determination."

my concern is about the maltreatment of the poor dogs, that, as per nature, are absolutly unwilling to behave in this way…with some exceptions (maybe Vietnam) the use of dogs to force them in the fight between human beings had always resulted in a failure

It is truly terrible how cruel the French were in Haiti. As my name suggestions, the Haitian war of independence is among my favourite in military history. I have read literally every book on the subject ever written.

what is mazing is that the French who , as a principle, waged war to other nations to export their "Revolution" with abolishment of slavery, Human Rights and "égalité, Fraternité, Liberté" acted in this way..i've to began to read something on this war…

Leclerc – Rochambeau expedition happened under the reactionary system of Bonaparte who did wind the clock back – a terrible campaign

A good book is :

Pachonski, Wilson : Poland's Caribbean Tradegy

Columbia University Press 1986

It is far more than just looking at the Polish units

If you want a really good book on the Leclerc – Rochambeau expedition you should try Philippe Girard's The Slaves Who Defeated Napoleon. I own it, and it's not cheap but well worth the price, he leaves nothing out and is the definitive work on the subject.
