New evidence suggests that genetics play a bigger role on people's response to cilantro than had been understood.

I for one have always been able to tolerate it if it's finely chopped but can't stand it in its increasingly popular and fresh, leafy form.

Can anyone else bridge the gap or does it remain a matter of love/hate?

Question: what is the disposition of someone who plays with toy soldiers on the consumtion of cilantro?

A. Love it
B. Hate it
C. It depends on the quantity (Assume typical quantities.)
D. It depends on the form (cooked, raw, dried, fresh, etc)
E. The compromise position (C and D.)
F.

H.!

I don't care.

You can put it in or leave it out, I don't think it will matter to my enjoyment of anything that ought to have cilantro in it. It does not taste like soap to me, but it doesn't make much of a difference.

We keep fresh cilantro around the house and I work with it every day. My wife likes it in omelettes and all kinds of things. So I carefully wash, chop, and incorporate it. Something that makes my wife happy and only costs a dollar and takes a couple minutes is a good thing.

Tastes like soap to me. Then again thats why you love it or hate it….your genetics make it taste great or awful.

That's interesting. My dad likes to eat almost anything. He HATES cilantro. So do I. Hidden in a salsa is okay (as long as it's well hidden). but liberally sprinkled in its leafy form: no.

dBerczerk15 Mar 2017 8:53 a.m. PST

Oh, you're supposed to eat it then?

Cilantro and I have a pact to avoid each other like the plague

GurKhan15 Mar 2017 9:00 a.m. PST

What's "cilantro" in English?

Dwindling Gravitas15 Mar 2017 9:11 a.m. PST

Coriander (I had to look it up … never heard of cilantro before). Also known as Chinese parsley.

John Treadaway15 Mar 2017 9:20 a.m. PST

Bashytubits15 Mar 2017 11:05 a.m. PST

I use it as an additive to kick up the flavors in the dish. So E.

Its fine

Swampking15 Mar 2017 12:16 p.m. PST

It's fine but in moderation. If you use too much of it, it gives whatever it's in the aftertaste of soap. In salsa, especially a tomato based salsa, it's needed to balance out the acidity of the tomatoes. It's used in Mexican and Thai cooking constantly.

The only problem I have with coriander/cilantro is that it won't grow in our garden!

Like any other flavoring, depends on the amount, the dish, my mood, preparation, phase of the moon, and paring with other flavors.

Khusrau15 Mar 2017 4:29 p.m. PST

I use coriander a fair bit in cooking, but it needs to complement the dish. Excellent in leaf style in Thai style curries. For my Indian styles I tend to use a ground cumin and coriander base (usually with a touch of fenugreek and cardamon pods)

A. It's an important herb in Mexican cuisine and I use it often.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP15 Mar 2017 8:04 p.m. PST

I like it when it's used appropriately.

I guess that's true for just about any food, except for things that taste so bad that I won't eat them absent duress.

So cilantro is great in banh mi or on kao pad, but would not work as the primary green leafy vegetable in salad.

Cerdic16 Mar 2017 12:03 a.m. PST

K. Never heard of it.

Coriander I've heard of but it has never generated any heated debate.

GurKhan16 Mar 2017 2:16 a.m. PST

Coriander (I had to look it up … never heard of cilantro before). Also known as Chinese parsley.

Thanks – I wondered, but I wasn't sure. Anyone know why we call/used to call it "Chinese parsley" when it has a Greek name?

A, then. Love the stuff, seed or leaf.

Cerdic16 Mar 2017 3:07 a.m. PST

And why is it called cilantro in America when it already has two perfectly acceptable names….?

bobm195916 Mar 2017 6:00 a.m. PST

I like coriander….especially in a Naan bread

Rich Bliss16 Mar 2017 7:23 a.m. PST

Coriander refers to the seeds, usually ground. Cilantro is the green leaves.

grtbrt16 Mar 2017 7:49 a.m. PST

Ohhh! I thought the poll was about the Cilantro who works at the Penthouse Cub in Paris .
much more interesting than what he was referring to

GurKhan16 Mar 2017 8:15 a.m. PST

Coriander refers to the seeds, usually ground. Cilantro is the green leaves.

In the UK they're both coriander. Though probably only the leaves were ever "Chinese parsley". And in Spanish, or so Google Translate suggests at least, both the leaves and the seeds are cilantro.

Some people pare it with unusual flavors.
