I recently talked to a couple of miniature gamers who dismissed video gaming as distracting and not worth the time. I actually love both hobbies, although I am primarily a miniature gamer. The two hobbies can complement each other easily and can be enjoyed together. On the blog, I list several video games that are especially relatable to miniature wargaming.

What are your favorite video games, especially in relation to our hobby of miniature gaming?

Ultimate General: Civil War, Medieval Total War and MTW II – many different mods. Waiting for The Great Conflicts Mod in particular.

I started out making 3-D tiles for the DOOM board game, but it's since morphed into using extra pieces from the video games ("hidden" doors, stairs, elevators, etc), and also rules to go with them. In short, a whole new & different game (still working on it… ;-)

Plenty crossover from video gaming to the table. I've seen Fallout games, etc. I'm trying to use the Left4Dead game to write some zombie rules.

Favorite wargame-type games? Early Fallouts, the recent X-Coms, the Slytherin/GW Armageddon games.

Those gamers don't sound like ones I'd invite over.

Limited game time for me. Screen or tabletop. Years ago I lost hours to the junk food on the screen.

Yes, I enjoyed the game but in the end it took way to much time away from painting and gaming.

The Combat Mission series.
Command: Modern Air Naval Operations
And I really want to start playing Steel Beasts.

Same as VCarter: I had to pick, don't have time for both.

I used to play the hell out of the Close Combat Series, particularly 2 (A Bridge Too Far), 3 (Eastern Front), 4 (the Bulge), and 5 (Normandy). Endless hours at those, didn't even realize I was a 'wargamer' ;)

Then I picked up miniature wargaming in 2009. I wish I'd stuck with computer gaming, it's sooooo much cheaper and less time consuming!!! But now I'm addicted to minis…

V/R,
Jack

Take Command Second Manassas. Love it.

I'm not picky: mostly miniatures, with board games and card games with friends. However, I take the Xbox 360 for a spin for first-person shoot-'em-ups. Just a completely mindless way to unwind at the end of a day. Modern Warfare is the current series in favor, solo mission called Resistance -- you, replenishable armament, Paris streets, and wave after wave of ever-tougher enemies.

I'm not very good, only got past middle teen waves until a friend suggested the hunker-down position inside a building instead of running and gunning all over the map. That got me up to low 20s. Then I watched a YouTube video of a guy who got through 150 levels by exploiting a bug in the PC software (standing on the top of a wall). It works, but is boring, but he did offer a tip about ducking helicopter fire and putting claymores at certain spots on the map. Sans bug exploitation, that got me to level 31.

Also played a lot of the Halo series (not the current one that needs the Xbox One).

On the PC side, played a lot of the John Tiller designs (old school hex) as well as StarCraft. Tried a bit of the Total War series, which was impressive for the short time I played 'em.

XCOM, Mechwarrior, Total War, and the Doom series were my time killers for several years.

Miniatures have been the focus the last couple, although I did take a couple of weeks out to play the 1821 game Ktravlos posted a link to.

At the end of the day a painted miniature is a real, physical object that one can enjoy gaming with indefinitely as opposed to a finite amount of replayablility with a computer simulation/game. Having taken nearly every faction in STW and MTW to victory at ;east once, it takes some time to wish to replay them and the move to online registry and updates with the newer games leaves me cold.

While painting is not per se as enjoyable as gaming, there is the satisfaction of creation and the anticipation of gaming with the product.
