Which is your favorite basing for 28mm (but also 15mm) Napoleonics?

JimDuncanUK09 Mar 2017 8:59 a.m. PST

Depends on your preferred ruleset/playing group.

Some use 4 28mm foot figures per 40x40mm base (2x2) with several bases for each infantry unit or 2 cavalry figures per 50x50mm base (2x1) with several bases per unit.

Others use 6 28mm foot figures per 45x40mm base (3x2) with several bases per infantry unit.

15mm figures can be similar scaled down or more figures per base.

I only play Napoleonics in 10mm these days.

8-10 figures on a 3x3 base

For my 10-15mm I use Age of Eagles basing, 1x1.75 and 1x1 inches. I find it easy to sabot that size for whatever rules I tinker with.

For 15mm I use the old Napoleon's Battles standard--foot are based 2 across and 2 deep on a .75 by 1 inch base. Cav are 2 by 2 on a 1 inch by 2 inches.

For 1/72 plastics my foot are based 2 across to a 1x1 inch base and my cav are based 3 across on a 1.5x1.5 inch base.

For 12mm Scruby's (my favorite scale!) my foot are 2x2 on a .66x.66 base and my cav are 2 across on the same size base.

In 15mm I do all my horse and musket armies on steel, 20x15, 2 figures each. I can cut an army's worth of magnetic movement trays in 90 minutes or less. Works for every rule set I ever heard of almost.

28mm – Four infantry (2x2) on 30mmx40mm, Three Cavalry 60mmx50mm, Gun and four crew 60mmx80mm
15mm (new project) – still deciding. Looking at 40mmx15mm for infantry, 40mmx30mm for cavalry and artillery.

4 infantry or 2 cavalry on 40mm square base.
Guns 40mm wide, 80mm deep.

This is where I differ from most, 1 = 60 so can be 2 to 5 figures on a company stand but Cavalry is always 2 per stand with at least one 1 figure stand in a regiment. Not all my battalions in a army are equal.
