How wide does the river need to be for the peagus bridge?

surdu200508 Mar 2017 9:23 a.m. PST

I don't know Bolt Actikn, but I have run that scenario many times. Shots across the river should be at medium range.

The actual river is about 250 feet across.
What scale are you doing or what bridge model are you using ?

I think he wants to know how long the bridge model is so he can get or make an appropriate river.

Looking at The Google, it appears to be about 80 metres or 260 feet wide at the bridge. In my scale 1/72 (20mm) I made my bridge about 36 feet long which is shorter than it should be (should be 43 inches). But it still looks cool. I scratch-built my bridge.

It actually crosses the Caen Canal, the Orne River lies east of the canal and is crossed by the D514 at the Ranville Bridge about 600 yards further east.

The current bridge is about 140' and the canal about 300' but narrows at the bridge. Both bridge and canal have been widened since the battle. The old bridge was extended about 15' in the 60s so the estimate of 250' above probably isn't too far off the mark.

Definitely get the specification for the model you are planning to use as opposed to the dimensions of the canal itself. There are a few bridges out there in various scales and they are not exact. For a wargame table the bridge in actual scale would be a long terrain piece. Use the old adage: measure twice, cut once.

Wargammer1999 if you can wait until Sunday, I'll measure my bridge. I just finished building my BA bridge made by Sarrisa Precision (finally) but I'm currently sitting in Dallas Fort Worth airport waiting for a connection to Oklahoma City. When I get home on Sunday I can get you the info.

Thank you. I can wait until Sunday. I am in no hurry.

Do you have the canal measured?

Guinny14 Mar 2017 5:50 a.m. PST

I grabbed a few measurements off the display board we had made. Here you go:

Hello Wargamer1999, sorry I didn't post sooner but today is my first day back home since I posted that I'd measure when I got home. I had a last minute change in business plans and had to reroute to Juarez, Mexico.

Thanks Guinny for covering for me. You're measurements match mine. I like the water in your pic.
