"Got some 15mm Landsknechts - where to go from here?" Topic

At a local trading day I got my hands on some 15mm Landsknecht figures. Most look to be minifigs 15mm, but there might be some other stuff in there.

These are the guys with fancy clothes, so I've gathered they're for later in the 16th century.

So who would be a good opponent for them?

If you wanted a person who is relatively new to 16th century wargaming to know one thing, what what it be?

Any recommendations in terms of books or sources to get up to speed on the period?

Best opponents for Landknechts are Swiss, Spanish, and more Landsknechts. The one thing you need to know is that English language sources are few and far between. I started out in the period by getting the Osprey on Pavia.

The great thing about Landsknecht is that they were like Swiss-alot of different armies used them for decades. Im sure others can and will give you much more detail,but these are one of my favorites!

I look at them as the renaissance equivalent of an ancient skirmisher armed with javelin & shield. Everybody had them – or at least troops that looked like them.

Italy was the usual destination.

You will have an on-line source for George Gush's book on Renaissance armies. Good information and line drawings. We all used this extensively back on the day.
A google image search on "battle of Pavia" or " L. Funken book on Renaissance Armies" will bring up many beatiful color images that should get the painting mojo stoked.

I few years ago I got boxes of Ospreys at an estate sale. Sure enough, the Pavia campaign book was in there. Along with a men at arms book for the Landsknechts themselves. I had been meaning to sort the boxes by date and get them on the shelves, but I forgot I had them until I saw your post.

Excellent. I was thinking of doing a lower model count approach so I can probably allocate some of them to make up part of the enemy army.
