The usual notation for needing to "roll high" is X+. For example, if you need to roll a 5 or 6 on a d6, the notation would usually be 5+. This notation has become a defacto standard in our hobby. What about needing to roll a given number or less? Let's say you need to roll a 3 or less on a d10 to pass a roll. What should the notation be in your opinion? |

<=3 Normally shortened to a < sign with a line under it but I don't know how to get that symbol. |

I have frequently seen X-. So 3- would mean "roll 3 or lower'. |

Thanks for the love guys. :-D |

Make sure all rolls in the system go the same way: high is good, low is bad. Or vice-versa, but we generally associate higher as better, so it's easier to remember. |

I might use 6≤ with the ≤ as a superscript… Hmmm… |

Totally agree emckinney. I hate it when die rolls go in different directions. |

Careful with 6< ,as it means more than 6. Safer to stay with <6? |

as per Dave Crowell above I have usually seen X- |

Traveller used to use X-, so I go with that. |

I agree with Dave 055 and always write "X or better" or "X or lower". Homegrown notations are not consistent. Boolean and Lambda Calculus (though I find this the most clear, elegant, and well-defined way to encapsulate wargame rules) notation confuses. For tables and such, I would title the table (or row) "Hit (Save/Success/Wahtever) on the Listed Number or Greater/Less". |

X+ and X- seem to be the most logical. |

Boolean and Lambda Calculus notation confuses OK – now I want to see the DBA rules defined with lots of anonymous functions …… John |

There is no special notation needed. Just the 3 is enough. |

This weekend we asked random gamers at two FLGSs what various notations would mean to them without guidance. With 100% accuracy (i.e. all gamers knew immediately that it meant X or less) the winner is: X- The reason we can't always write out "X or less" is that the notation needs to appear in stat-line charts. And the reason we'd rather not just leave it "X" with no notation is that a chart can include multiple numbers and we want no chance for confusion as to which number means number of dice (e.g. Xd10) or hit number (X-). We also want it absolutely clear that you need to roll low. Thanks to everyone who provided advice, it is very much appreciated. |
