Scenic Express in Pennsylvania is your bet bet for all kinds of cool stuff concerning grasses.

Looks like a "Meadow" matt that is made by a company in Germany and is available from "Scenic Express"!

If you are going to Cold Wars in a couple of weeks Scenic Express will be there in the Vendor Hall, so you can stop by and take a in person look, or check them out on their web site!

Yep, that is no doubt available at Scenic Express! I've been buying flock and ground cover from their website for over ten years. Unquestionably the most extensive and thorough product range for scenic and terrain items you'll find anywhere.

They have a range called "Silflor" which consists of various types of ground cover that look like this. Almost endless varieties!

Ironic thing is that they market themselves primarily as a model railroading supply company. But I have NO doubt that a huge percentage of their customer base are wargamers and not model railroaders!

Is that a 10mm setup? It looks great. I'm bending ever so slowly to wanting to do all moderns in 10mm

RetroBoom03 Mar 2017 8:08 a.m. PST

Zargon, these are 15mm. here's the report (not mine): link

and SEESH!!! Those meadows are expensive! $30 USD for 11"x7"?!? Anyone know how to do something similar for cheaper?

Baranovich03 Mar 2017 8:54 a.m. PST

@RetroBoom,

Yeah, no denying that, some of those specialized ground covers are expensive. They look great but you'd have to spend a lot to do a decent-sized area.

I buy from Scenic Express mostly just the big buckets of different colors of static grass and flock, which are about $25 USD and go a long, long way.

But things like those meadows get really pricey and they don't cover that much area as you already discovered!

Hey, do you have Michaels Crafts stores near where you live?

Believe it or not, they sell something that is normally used for floral decorating that looks amazingly like miniature meadows and soft fields!

I bought a few of these to use as marsh areas for my gaming tables.

These come square or round, and you get a 12" x 12" piece for only $6.50 USD! Way better price then you're paying for the Scenic Express stuff!

How much flock and time do you have?

You could do this with very tedious and careful usage of static grass with a static gun. But it takes several passes and a lot of time. In the end you'd be better off purchasing.

Or, you could try the "shaved teddybear fur" method.

That stuff from Michaels looks great and the price is definitely reasonable.

The Michael's Pot Toppers are OK, but are better used cut up into smaller patches. They make good grass clumps.

For larger areas I use cut up train mats.
Most of the larger companies (Heki, Busch etc) sell large mats in various colors and sizes.

I'm talking 4 x 6 feet or bigger.

I buy these, as the price is reasonable, and cut them up to cover large fields. Much cheaper and easy to use.

I picked up two dozen large mats of various makes and sizes, at a flea market for 20 bucks.
Try a local train show. Lots of scenery bargains to be had at them.
