Am tempted to start some WW2 aerial gaming, and wondered about getting a photorealistic terrain mat (probably vinyl?)rather than the usual plain blue or green hand painted items. Questions are 1) Am I the first to think of this, or does someone already make one, and of so who? and 2)If not, anybody know where I could get a picture of ideally the Dover coastline, in colour, looking vaguely 1940sish, that would be big enough to be blown up to say 3ft by 4ft? (or bigger)

I hand painted my 6x4 folding hex board with the area around the ball bearing factories at Schweinfurt.

I use it for my USAAF bombing game.

I've seen some on-line, for Dover.

Seems the white cliffs there are a favorite

Try checking Google Images.

I'd go at least 4' x 6' for the smallest aerial mat, so you can do large raids, when desired.

Not sure what current photos of southeast Britain look like nor what exactly you want buit AFAIk you are breaking new ground. Find photos you like. Reconcile scale. Photoshop them into one image. Have the result printed by a vinly banner maker.

You need to visit the Wings of Glory Aerodrome. Been done loads of times, several guys there can give you pointers or send you the files to print out really big maps, including current satellite imagery that has been edited of modern landmarks to back date them to the war. Here's an old thread from 2013 I have saved, but there have been many more recent. Jump in! There are both WWII and WWI players, both using maps of the Channel:

Thanks all for responses – NKL, yes that is what I'm after but is quite pricy (but does come with hexes if necessary), EnemyAce I'll follow up your lead too.

Hi EnemyAce – I've registered at WoG aerodrome, and had 37 people view my request, but no actual guidance yet!
