People complained about running gear maintenance on the Tiger and Panther …

Isn't that one hell of a shot trap between the hull and the treads?

GarrisonMiniatures01 Mar 2017 10:12 a.m. PST

It's not really a tank. It's self-propelled flying saucer with a fake gun and being carried on a tracked launcher.

Such a strange shape of the hull was made to the tank does not fly away after a nuclear explosion. I am not kidding.
On the way, too, it was quite hilarious incident – tank could safely ride through the swamps, but had problems with the rotation of the terrain due to a too small specific pressure.

"Rotation of the terrain"?

Vostok1703 Mar 2017 12:42 a.m. PST

Yes. In normal soils he was just a huge turning circle (not to mention the fact that the turn around on the spot, he could not, in principle). In short, he could not turn around.
Including this, he was not put into production.

emckinney03 Mar 2017 12:50 p.m. PST

So, just churning up the soil underneath the treads, unable to get a decent grip. I'm surprised that couldn't be fixed by track link design.

Vostok1703 Mar 2017 2:07 p.m. PST

There just do a lot of factors played a role – and low pressure on the ground, and the design of the running gear, and engine power. In the end, it was simply decided not to modify it, because it was considered too expensive and hopeless.
And so the tank is quite interesting. I saw him in the museum in Kubinka – he makes a very strange impression – as if the boat was put on caterpillars.

As an ex-threadhead, everytime I see this abomination I get the shakes. TWO tracks are bad enough. FOUR, with two of them UNDER the damned tank is just asking for trouble (anyone want to figure out how to fix a thrown tank on this POS???). Some engineers just HATE tankers…. Its enough to make a God fearing tanker transfer to the <SHUDDER> infantry…

Well you could just transfer to the Mech Infantry ! wink

Yep … looks like a maintenance nightmare. An accident waiting to happen ! With that hull, looks Amphibious ! Nuc detonation not withstanding. huh? I'm not surprised it did well in the swamps …
