Nice to know someone's thinking of me… or of my rules, at least! :D Apologies, Mutant Q, for the acute lack of updates. There has been progress, slow (even ponderous) though it has been! I'd intended to release the first beta playtest version late last year, but health issues and other fun got in the way of things. On the upside, the rules have had a number of extra alpha-level tests, and a few problems have been exposed, for which new mechanics are being worked on to solve. Just to prove it ain't all talk, here's a preview of some of the ship data cards for KotSB!

The biggest issue at the moment has been shields; they aren't behaving as I intended, and are a bit too much like mere extra hull / armour, rather than projected energy fields. I have decided to re-write them entirely, rather than fudge a work-around. I want to get this right! The basic game certainly plays fast and furiously though. We've managed to field 20 ships a side, and bring it to a devastating conclusion within 2 hours, although that was without a lot of the 'flavour' of Admirals, different crew qualities, and other details. Most importantly though, the game plays as it should – a fight between squadrons of starships, not individual models. I am expecting to go into hospital this Friday for what should (hopefully) be 'the beginning of the end' of my cancer saga, after which I will be able to dedicate more time to KotSB! and other projects. Best of luck with your health. The rules sound interesting. Would love to see a major Star Trek battle played to conclusion in a few hours. |

Now I feel like a schmuck for bugging you. The previews look great. I'll have a closer look at those beta rules when I get home from work tonight. In the meantime, you work on getting well. |

Ha ha, fear not, Mutant Q! I feel not in the least bugged, and if I'm to be absolutely honest with myself, I must confess I oft need a fire lit beneath me to get me back onto a project. Well, I was indeed expecting to be in hospital today… but our expectations are not always met. :L Due to a cold that got onto my lungs a couple weeks back, no surgery for me, at least, not for two more weeks at least. So, back to rules and other things. I'm at a crossroads regarding the shields, and the smallcraft rules keep throwing out unexpected curveballs. I think fighters and their ilk are the most vexing aspect of a set of Star Trek rules. They have the potential to strip away much of the look and feel of a 'Trek battle, replacing it with "Pacific Carrier War in Space" – which I'd rather avoid… But, that's what playtesting is for. I will aim to get the playtest rules out before I am rescheduled for hospital, but we'll see how things go. :) - Martin |

Here's hoping for the best of news for your health, dude. On fighters… yeah. It takes a very careful balance to make them work. One extreme, they're not effective and no one uses them, the other, you get late-game SFB where they're 90% of your battle force's firepower.
Even in the old FASA rules, you could design a corvette with a single FP-4 and run a swarm of them…. |
