My SYW collection is entirely Essex. When I first started the period I really didn't know much about the options that were out there and since Essex was stocked at my local brick and mortar that's what I went with. I really don't mind the 'squat' look of the figures--but the cast flags were always an issue. Many conversions later getting flags to units is becoming an increasing drain on a diminishing resource--my painting time. So, a question to the community at large. Can anyone recommend a manufacturer that wouldn't look out of place next to the Essex line that also has an open hand ready for the piano wire treatment? From what I've seen Blue Moon looks close in scale but I wonder how they 'blend', especially cavalry. Freikorps has the open hand aspect and again seem to be close in scale. Maybe the pics aren't that great but the Freikorps don't seem as 'nice' as the Blue Moon castings? How about Old Glory 15s? Thanks for any insight! |

All of my SYW figures are Essex too. My solution was to get the wife to paint the flags. |

I happily mixed OG with Essex and they look fine. I do like the Essex horses a lot. |

Check the Essex website they have new figures for the SYW without cast on flags, French and Prussian so far, but probably easily converted with paint alone. Also the German figures in the AWI section have plain flagpoles. |

I mix Old Glory, Blue Moon, and Essex although usually not in the same unit. But they should work fine. |

Thanks for the replies folks and apologies for the tardy reply--didn't know I couldn't reply to a post for three days with a new account. So I've ordered some pole only Essex and some Blue Moon and we'll see how they all go together! (FWIW my wife indicated it her painting the flags is a non starter. . . oh well, that was the best option for sure!) |

The Essex figures are a bit shorter and far more stout than the Blue Moon (OldGlory25s). Speaking personally, I would not mix them in the same unit. On the other hand, it's always amazed me how figures that look so incompatible side-by-side can look just fine on a large table at a 2 or 3 foot distance! |
