How did you make the hexagon board. Very nice looking layout and figures. |

Hi Bob, The board is from the boardgame itself. In this case it is the mounted version from the 'epic' expansion which allows bigger battles to be fought |

Nice work! I assume the figures are Rapier, from the look of the elephants? How do you indicate strength of units? Mollinary |
Foxgamer | 27 Feb 2017 5:59 a.m. PST |
They are Rapier Miniatures… We are defining infantry by the number of ranks (2 medium, 3 heavy), for awkward units like warband and auxilia we are distributing them on the base slightly staggered. At the end of the day for us, we will use the figures on the base to define the difference because we will know each other's army. A base of auxilia is a base, rather than how may figures are on it. Incidentally we are having lots of discussion as to how the Roman auxilia translate into actual figures…Samnites? Italiotes? Italians dressed identically to Romans but fighting in a slightly different style? Any thoughts anyone? |

Hi Fox, Thanks for the answer. Sorry I wasn't very clear in my question. What I was actually getting at was how you marked units when they lost a block? On Roman auxilia, this was actually discussed on a thread in the C&C rules forum, titled "DBA Roman troop types convert to C&C?" You can see my comments there, but as far as I can see Richard Borg does seem to use auxilia in the Punic War scenarios as Roman Allies. Later scenarios I think he is just representing lower quality legionaries. I love what you are doing here, I went down this route some years ago, and it brought me back to Ancients gaming after a gap of thirty years. I think Epic Ancients is an incredible game, fun, skilful, easy to play, hard to master. I started with my troops (Rapier) for use on the original board, and graduated to Hexon. I hope you have as much fun from this project as I have had from mine! Mollinary |

Cheers Mollinary… To mark loses we are going to use casualty markers into the hex; Baccus do several ranges of dead ancient people! Like you, I have been inspired with Command and Colors for the last ten years, likewise it brought my passion back for ancients. I love that you can play an Epic battle with 8 players and resolved in about 3 hours. Many Wargames writers could learn from clean, elegant and purposeful boardgames rules that place the player in charge of decision making, as opposed to micro managing and protractor measuring (but that's just my opinion!) |

Yes, I have a load of Baccus casualty markers. My units now go in sabot mdf bases which are 80mm by 30mm interior dimensions. They contain four bases, but the first occupies the full front half of the sabot, and the back half has one 40m and 20mm long bases. As the unit is worn down, the rear bases are removed and replaced with casualty bases, so a unit with only one block left often still has half to two thirds the actual figure strength. My heavy infantry tend to have 48 figures in three ranks. By the way, it is not just your opinion! Sounds like you might also like Simon Millers To the Strongest rules, which work in a box grid, but have much of the elegant simplicity of C&C. My armies now serve for both systems. Mollinary PS I should have said that the thread on auxilia is the TMP thread! |

I have those rules too, but am yet to play them… I know that 'To The Strongest' have a long history from Simon, with their roots firmly in Command and Colors. Any links or photos of your basing system Mollinary? |

If you go to Simon's blog bigredbat.blogspot.co.uk and look at Pharsalus posts, you will see a lot of my late Republican Romans in the basic unit sabots, Mollinary |

Looks great. We have similarly had a lot of fun with C&C:A Epic with 6mm. I am using C&C:A Epic this year as my convention game in 54mm. Started by putting on Ilipa at Flintcon earlier this year. Bill |
