Hi. Any suggestions for figured to use as 15mm German sailors for boxer rebellion. I'm after sailors not the seebattalion marines. Any help appreciated.

Peter pig has various sailors in ww1 and ww2.

Thanks. I have loads of stuff from Peter pig. I have some Russian rcw ones and British…but couldn't see any suitable ones.

Here is an image of German Sailors in 1900. The style of uniform is so close that of the Russian or Austrian that in 15mm they are interchangeable

For the Herero Wars, Roy Jones suggested that I use Old Glory's British/Russian pack from their Boxer range for German sailors, as DyeHard has mentioned.

Many thanks. I may get some of the british and Russian pack of old glory….I guess you get a fairly even mix of each.

Was hoping I could find some others so can control how many I get etc

Most Boxer Rebellion ranges include Austro-Hungarian sailors. Would they be a closer match?

badwargamer25 Feb 2017 3:19 p.m. PST

They would be fine..but I'm struggling to find anything much apart from some things from old glory and peterpig. Surely there are some german, Austrian or Russian figures out there??

The thing is that a sailor is a sailor is a sailor…pretty much. Just about all were based on the RN and differed in small details, like the number of white stripes around the wide sailor's collar, and whether there were stars in the corners or not.

The French were a little different with a hat which had a red pompom on top, and a white chinstrap which could be worn up over the top of the cap. Some had ribbons which hung down the back, some didn't.

Some (most) wore Sennet (straw) hats (brims up or down), some wore pith helmets (with and without neckcloths).

Equipment detail varied, but in 15mm this would hardly be an issue. Gaiter colours differed, some black, some brown canvas, some white.

The best way to distinguish is by the colour variations of the uniforms and headgear; blue and white in various combinations.

It really doesn't make commercial sense for makers to try to do a set of every nation's landing parties when, basically, they all looked the same.

Thanks for that Botch B. I've been trying to find some sailors of the period in trousers as opposed to gaitors but not much joy. I think I'll have to give in and get the gaitored version.

I like the old glory figures but they come in a mixed bag of british sailors in straw hats and then russina sailors in the normal sailor hat. I can get away with ordering one pack as I can use a few more British sailors but don't need more than that, so I'm after other figures to make enough Germans!

badwargamer08 May 2017 6:34 a.m. PST

I've ordered both the old glory sailors mixed packs and will see what the actual make up of figures is like. May have to order more and sell off some unwanted figures

badwargamer13 May 2017 11:19 a.m. PST

Well the packs have arrived. The Russian sailors are perfect for the Germans as have long trousers rather than gaiters. If I get some more packs I'm going to be left with too many Brits as I have some Peter pig ones already. I can either put them in my pile of figures to paint 'one day ' or sell I suppose.

The other pack is pretty good. I think the Italians can mix in with the russians and French so that's good.
