I need to scratch build some rivers, and am interested in the possible Cold War battles in the Fulda Region, so would like to know approximately how wide the rivers there are, and what type, e.g. deep, fast flowing; shallow and rocky; with shallow or steep banks; narrow enough to put an armored vehicle launched bridge across; wide; etc.; etc.?

From what I've read, there were a lot of these at the bottoms of the narrow valleys in the region, and a lot of bridges across them as well.

So, any ideas and info on what widths to use, and/or what type to make would be appreciated.

General info on river widths on the tabletops would be useful too.

I'm thinking perhaps 1" – 1.5" or so for streams, and 3" or so for rivers, for 1/144th scale.

Thoughts?

Not my Ao…
But may I suggest you google maps. Take the names of those riversyou are in for, the re type them and look at pictures?

Thanks.

I'll give that a try.

I did find a photo of one bridge over the river in Fulda, and based upon the rough car length in it, the bridge appears to be about 100 yards/meters wide, and the river about 80meters, or so.

I'll need to check out some other streams too, flowing into that, since I was hoping to have some to cross that aren't so wide, so I can use a few AVLBs in various scenarios, if the bridges do get blown by the defenders.

A floating pontoon, and/or ribbon bridge would be a major undertaking, so not sure I want to go all in on that, unless it is in the smaller, 1/285th scale.

Was my AO; albeit, many years ago. Generally speaking, the streams are narrow, deep, fast moving and the banks are steep. A good track crew might find places to cross, but nearly impossible for wheels. Excepting perhaps the Fulda River (I'd have to double check), I don't recall any streams/rivers/dikes an AVLB couldn't bridge. As you mentioned earlier, there are lots of bridges. How wide will depend on your ground scale. Do you have topo maps?

Thanks for the info.

I was wondering about the depth of the river. Given its width, I suspect it might be fordable in some places, especially with snorkeling gear.

Nope, sadly, no maps currently, though I'd love to see some, since they would be very useful for setting up terrain and scenarios, I suspect.

If you are really into details, you might find on internet period soviet maps for sale. Incredibly detailed with all the needed info for rivers, houses resistance heights… Can't remember where but google it.

Then if not done somewhere a bit of prompt or google translate will do your glossary.
