Were the Japanese soldiers fighting against Americans in the Pacific more likely to wear soft caps or helmets?

I'm not an expert on this, but I believe the usual practice was to wear helmets during combat operations, though the soft cap was often worn underneath.

Hope this helps.

From photos/film I'd say GF is right, but I'm hardly an expert.

Depends a lot on where they were – some of the island garrisons were at the end of a very long logistical tether

When Japanese troops could wear a helmet from photos of the time I would say they did – in fact, some wore their helmets over their caps

As the war went on it was not unusual for units to have a mix of troops in helmets and caps

Photos suggest helmets as more common but as a wargamer, it's nice to have both.

I'm not sure photographs are a good guide as it's unlikely they were taking group pictures during actual combat. I'd go with helmets, perhaps with a few caps scattered in just for looks.

I was thinking of the combat footage/photos I've seen – a fair amount I suppose – all of which has featured helmets primarily, but as you say that's maybe not a good guide. All the same, I'd go with helmets for the vast majority and the odd cap and/or the odd pith-helmet.

I agree with uglyfatbloke, out in the field I expect it was what each man felt happy with, for myself I think a very thick helmet.
