I just got these rules and already read through them. They seem pretty straight forward for the most part. My buddy and I are looking Battle of Champion Hill. We going with 6mm and as we are waiting for the mini's, we'll be trying out the battle using foamcore (cut to base size), just to get used to the rules. I do have a couple of questions though. 1- When it comes to the actual playing of the game, does anyone that has played AoF have any suggestions on time clock, priority points etc they want to share? 2- Basing. I know what's recommended, and also personal choice, but how have others based per AoF? |

I base my Baccus 6mm ACW guys in 2 rows of 12 (with the flag group in the middle of the front row), which fits the width of my bases perfectly. (I can't remember the exact size of the bases.) Artillery and crew, and officers and staff go on half bases. I put a few mounted figures alone on small stands to use as runners or messengers (in case I decide to make up some rule for orders needing to be delivered). I honestly don't think it matters what size stands you use as long as you are consistent across your units and they fit your table. |

Baccus units are usually 60x30 with 2 rows of 12 figures. However I base my Baccus figures on a 20x20 with 2 rows of 4 figures. I then put 3 bases on a 60x30 sabot. You could base any number of 20x20 bases on a suitably sized sabot for almost any set of rules including Altar of Freedom. link

Good questions about the Turn Clock and PP. Number one game tip would be to actively change your bidding style during the game and, likewise, to pay attention for any habits your opponent might be repeating. If your opponent is constantly spending most of his points to move a single division he feels is critical, don't even try to outbid him. Let him waste those points while you spread yours around and get to accomplish more. If I see my opponent spreading his points around in a fairly even manner, in that case I prefer to win control of the Turn Clock and make sure I kill it quickly, messing up his plans for the turn. Finally, one last tip--assuming your generals aren't inept, it often pays to bid low and keep the same bid across as many divisions as possible. This means your opponent may get to activate several divisions ahead of you, but also means when your Priority level is reached, a huge number of your forces can go at once. This strategy is especially useful when your opponent is not aggressively killing the clock (if he has control). Lots of strategies to consider, and most of them are based on careful observation of how your opponent is playing the game. Do not become predictable, as an experienced player will pick up on that immediately and capitalize. |

Hello DougEagle! The basing is the same as what Baccus uses in their Polemos series of rules that cover a lot of different periods. Which is 60x30 for infantry, cavalry, and limbers, 24 infantry on a base, 9 cavalry on a base. Gun crews and commanders are all on 30x30. This basing also matches the way Baccus sells their figures so you have no left over or short figures. It's also become pretty much a standard for 6mm. So can buy and sell these bases on ebay, hook up with other players and play a lot of other rule sets without having to rebase. AoF is an excellent set of rules and the recommended basing will allow you to maximize the game. My entire collection of 6mm figures for all periods is based on 60x30 bases. Best regards, Glenn |
