Have you ever seen an adult gamer cry when they lose a tabletop miniature battle?

shelldrake21 Feb 2017 9:35 p.m. PST

No, but then I only play with people that are non competative and play for the fun of the game and the good conversation that goes with it.

D A THB21 Feb 2017 9:47 p.m. PST

No, I never bring a mirror with me.

David Manley21 Feb 2017 10:22 p.m. PST

No, but i have seen a player go into an uncontrollable rage and try to tip the table over

Winston Smith21 Feb 2017 10:39 p.m. PST

There's no crying in wargaming!

bsrlee21 Feb 2017 10:40 p.m. PST

Similar to Dave – grumpy guts kicked a chair across the room after loosing to a well behaved 13 yr old due to his own stupidity. A man mountain from a couple of tables down stood up and glowered at him and he crawled back into his hole. Never seen him again thankfully.

Korvessa21 Feb 2017 11:14 p.m. PST

Had a guy throw dice once.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut21 Feb 2017 11:21 p.m. PST

I have seen thrown miniatures and dice, swearing and raging, but never crying.

nickinsomerset21 Feb 2017 11:22 p.m. PST

Some of my figures have been "placed" back in their boxes rather roughly after "they" lost a game badly!

Tally Ho!

Ghecko21 Feb 2017 11:30 p.m. PST

No, but many, many years ago I did throw the dice in a moment of frustration. In my defence, I was playing WRG Napoleonics at the time…

christot22 Feb 2017 12:42 a.m. PST

In the 70s at my first club (I was about 16 or 17) there was an irritating little Bleeped text of the same age. He was almost universally disliked. A real pita. Those days it was all 6th edition ancients, and he had a hinchcliff Sassanid army painted in hideous bright colours. Sassanids (along with late romans) were a real gimmick army under those rules and he was a truly gimmicky player to boot.
One evening he was playing another guy, one of the nicest and most popular members. Suddenly there was an eruption from the normally mild mannered man, and reached across the 6 x4 table, grabbed the annoying little B"@&£&! Dragged him across the table and started punching him. Sassanid Persians flew everywhere, We were obviously a bit shocked, but went to break it up (we might have been a little slower than perhaps we should, I mean, we didn't really mind him getting a few digs in).
Eventually we pulled him off… the tragedy of all this was that the nice guy was the one who left the club, and we were stuck with the other one.

hocklermp522 Feb 2017 2:24 a.m. PST

My so-called "best Friend" became enraged during a game where I thwarted his rescue of prisoners by having my troops execute them. He flicked miniature after miniature off the table while his brother and I both said, "It's only a game." The dice decided the fate of the prisoners, who were wanted IRA terrorists, but "Reason" was left behind as he left the room. Never gamed with him again.

Nope but have had a person get angry & walk out because he took personal offense to having his troops destroyed.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 4:28 a.m. PST

Nope. Only the anger things, like above.

PzGeneral22 Feb 2017 4:29 a.m. PST

Saw two guys almost come to blows at an ORIGINS Legends of the Five Rings card game tournament. The both jumped up, ended nose to nose before other people stepped in…..

Not sure why or what the result of their disagreement was.

45thdiv22 Feb 2017 5:08 a.m. PST

I had a guy at a convention lose it after an exciting final melee concluded the game. He picked up my figures a tossed them across the room.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 5:28 a.m. PST

I've seen an adult cheat blatantly because he was losing to children.
I missed the game in which one of our regulars threw his dice against a wall and stomped off to watch television in the living room while the game proceeded--the game was at his house--but we still talk about it when we get together. Even his own side enjoyed that one.

They were both dishonest players too, and I've only ever known three.

Weasel22 Feb 2017 5:39 a.m. PST

Not outright cry, but I've seen a few people at stores and conventions throw a hissy fit, storm off and otherwise act as babies.

redbanner414522 Feb 2017 6:12 a.m. PST

No crying but I've seen a tantrum thrown.

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 7:05 a.m. PST

In my experience, crying is restricted to children, more mature players tend to feel frustration, and less likely, anger, particularly when faced with cheating or rudeness in other players.

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 7:14 a.m. PST

A very long time ago, a person in a WWII Desert game
hurled a beautiful scratch-built portee against a
wall because he kept rolling 'miss' when firing it.

Have not gamed with him since. Almost 50 years.

But no crying…

Lucius22 Feb 2017 7:46 a.m. PST

Stiff upper lip here. Smiles and effusive congratulations for my opponent's wildly lucky dice.

All while weeping copiously on the inside.

Wackmole922 Feb 2017 8:00 a.m. PST

had a guy flip a card table with a game of third reich on it.

Old Wolfman22 Feb 2017 8:29 a.m. PST

Seen some browned-off players at GenCon(Sat across the table from one dude who kinda lost it during a game),and elsewhere. Felt rather down myself after some bum die rolls or results of a game. But still,I play it out. As U.S. Grant told W.T. Sherman after the first day at Shiloh; when told by Sherman that "we've had the devil's own day.",Grant's reply,"Yes. Lick 'em in the morning, though."

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 8:56 a.m. PST

I had a moment like Ghecko many years ago. Although my dice luck is famously bad, it is an embarrassing memory.

There was a time when a rather loathsome fellow tossed some of my figures around after he lost a melee. Had he not left the game the conflict would have left the table and into the "real world" and might have involved some crying. He never played in another of
my games.

Darkest Star Games Sponsoring Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 9:18 a.m. PST

In the only tournament in which I participated, my opponent ran a majority of his troops out in the open right through the middle of the table because he figured he could rush them up and assault in 2 turns and the game would be over, as he had done in a previous game. They were almost all gunned down, and he threw a hissy fit, grabbed one of my tanks and slammed it down on the table, breaking it. I was very surprised to discover I had reached across and grabbed him by his collar, dragged him to me across the table and had begun lecturing him on sportsmanship while he choked. He out weighed me by 100 lbs, and at the time I was maybe 150 lbs soaking wet. The oddest thing was that everyone waited until I finished my sermon, nodding and agreeing, before stepping in to help the guy.

Haven't played in a tourney since, and based on what I have seen of them, regardless of the game played, the ill tempers, poor manners, and bad behaviors won't have me changing my mind any time soon.

Bashytubits22 Feb 2017 9:56 a.m. PST

Never, unspeakably vile angry behavior and temper tantrums yes.

Personal logo The Virtual Armchair General Sponsoring Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 10:05 a.m. PST

Yes, about 45 years ago.

A grown man with more obvious neuroses than even the rest of us in this silly hobby, whose unsettling mantra over a year or two before he moved to another state--unlamented--was, "You're all against me."

Clearly, he closely associated any toys-on-a-table-top experience with his most inner self.

More pathetic in the end than annoying--but it was close.

All the time!

But I'd rather not talk about; mostly I game solo…

Rage, tantrums, flinging of items, yes. (but this is in the course almost 50 years of gaming and there has been very little of that) Crying, no.

Perris070722 Feb 2017 11:28 a.m. PST

Not even when they impaled themselves on their wire spears???

Personal logo McKinstry Supporting Member of TMP Fezian22 Feb 2017 12:39 p.m. PST

No but as others have said, too much really poor behavior including one fellow losing, flinging a die in anger striking a kid accidentally but hurting him. Avoided by most thereafter.

Henry Martini22 Feb 2017 5:38 p.m. PST

Do tears of laughter count?

Syrinx022 Feb 2017 7:18 p.m. PST

Real tears from an impaled spear – yes. Given there was blood it seemed reasonable.

Watched a club member throw their dice in the garbage in disgust after a string of unbelievably bad rolls but it was done with humor. The next set of dice seemed to get the message.

peterx Supporting Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 7:34 p.m. PST

There is no crying in wargaming. I agree with my esteemed colleagues.

peterx Supporting Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 7:54 p.m. PST

However I have seen grown men have hissy fit melt downs and dump a whole table of beautifully painted miniatures and scenery onto the floor. The horror. The horror.

Grignotage23 Feb 2017 11:04 a.m. PST

Nothing worse in gaming than somebody who gets all upset when they're losing or disagree with a rule, or is boorish when they're doing well.

I haven't seen actual crying, but whining, complaining, and arguing unnecessarily…

War Panda23 Feb 2017 1:35 p.m. PST

In my house there is never a shortage of crying. Dad crying at the kids to stop arguing. The kids crying because its not their turn. Mam crying because it's game night again. Parents crying because of all the crying going on…

But its alright because crying is good for you. My therapist said so.

War Panda23 Feb 2017 1:37 p.m. PST

I saw a mature 18 year old friend of mine cry when his favourite RPG character died. Many moons ago now…

Weasel23 Feb 2017 2:26 p.m. PST

Our high school games of Shadowrun had some heightened emotions for sure :D

Great War Ace23 Feb 2017 3:36 p.m. PST

No crying allowed in wargames? I'd make an exception for a beloved RPG character buying it. But I haven't seen it happen, yet…………

Marc at work24 Feb 2017 6:35 a.m. PST

Sooo many tantrums and grumps from all of us over the years (us being my gaming group, as it has varied down through the years) – including sulks, members leaving the club, showing off, sarcasm, anger, cheating (or possibly), rules lawyering, sledging etc.

I thought that was the fun of the hobby…

But actual tears – nope. We're grown adults for pete's sake…

Whaddaya mean I hurt your feelings?
