The only one I really knew about was the Trent Affair. But I should recall the 1971 "nuclear attack" incident as I was in college at that time and my mother was a local Civil Defense employee. But I don't recall anything about it.

The only one I knew was the Trent Affair. The 1971 thing was easy to miss since most media outlets ignored it. And that's just a scare, not a time when war threatened.

Yeah, war was closer in 1962 with the Cuban missile crisis. For all that JFK gets lamblasted in some circles, he was tough enough then to get the Soviets to back down.

That one I remember because my father was mobilized with his USAF Reserve unit but didn't go anywhere because the Soviets backed down and withdrew the missile-loaded ships.

Missed the 71 incident, however, while working at a local radio station I was on the air during the troubles between China and Russia in the mid 1970's.

Thing were really heating up and at one point the AP news feed teletype machine went wild. Ringing bells printing out like mad (never happened for me before). My first thought was, well here we go. Did I mention that I'm not much of the sports fan.

Same time as the final game of the World Series ended….

Recall Krushchev backed down when missiles were removed from Turkey, a deal that had to be kept secret since JFK wouldn't look as tough.
