I got a good deal on some recent auctions for a Leading Edge Alien Queen and a set of warriors along with some Kryomek Helions. I wasn't sure how to paint them, as I wanted them to look like the creatures in 'Alien', but thought plain black would be a bit boring. I also wanted some contrast in the bases, but not like they were running around in a green field! Still a bit undecided about them, but I think they'll grow on me!

I agree they look good and are ready to field. Funny thing here, I just googled pictures of the monster(s) from the Alien movies, and as you say they are all black. In my head I remembered them as what we would render in miniature as flesh colored with red or brown wash, and it seems to me I've seen 40K Tyranid armies painted this way, but again I did a search and most are a bone color with accents in various colors. The color scheme I'm thinking of, it looks like it's used sometimes for Ghouls from the WHFB Vampire Counts army. Memory plays tricks I guess. |

They look great. To make an inch-tall figure look black, you can't just paint it black. If you do that, it looks like a toy painted black. You have to paint it dark gray, wash it black, and dry-brush it with slightly lighter gray. I think that's pretty much what you did. Your figures came out great. |

They look cool! I could imagine those Kryomek guys as aliens born from non-human organisms---perhaps something aquatic (dolphin xenomorphs!) or an invertebrate. |

Thanks for the comments! A lot of HR Giger's work looks like washed out bone:
I was also in two minds about painting them like this example:
In the end I went for the 'Aliens' look- even if the 'blue' look could be down to lighting:
I did try a green wash over the blue, but decided it made them look too much like seaweed! |

If you watch the movie, they are really shiny like they are wet. I would gloss coat them. |

Ok.. i agree they look Great "especially' the Queen. @Inari7, I think is "right on the mark", look closely in all of the films, the Alien's have a shiney, almost 'wet' look to them. And as he mentioned, "gloss coat" them 'should' give you the look your wanting. Hmm not a 'big fan' of these particular warrior sculpts, however.. @Grignotage, makes a great point; i.e. the alien warriors take on the physical traits of the 'host' life form they gestate from, so "it works". It also gives you a great opportunity for various 'alien creatures. btw. the photo of the life size one hanging in the 'museum', it outstanding. |
