Now that I have finished my German WW2 Army refurbishment / reorganization (http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=427286), it's time to get started on their opponents: the Soviets! As before the goal here is to take a collection built in large part second hand and get it touched up and organized for Flames of War. Some of the recent additions are good as is, but a lot of the older models need new paint jobs, they need to be organized in to units, and given proper basing.

In any case here are some "before" photos!

As with my German army, I'll post pics and all my updates on this thread as I make progress.

Man, serious envy!!

First Unit: Keep it simple. You can *always* use another battalion of T34s! So while I catalog what I have and what I need, this is an easy place to start. First off they come off the old bases, and get new, longer ones to protect the gun barrels. We use a nice 2 part epoxy – none of this wimpy super glue for Mother Russia!

You can see the new base sizes here:

And here they are curing on their new shiny steel homes, while the T70s keep watch in back:

A little more progress. The T34/85s have been base coated and dry brushed. The 76s are finished and ready for basing.

Some more progress. I find that having my painting table in the den really helps a lot. I can sit down and work in very short increments while I wait for a pot to boil, or the dryer to finish spinning, and just do one little thing. Maybe add the sand to 20 bases, or give a group of vehicles a quick wash. With a convenient place to work, you can get a lot done just in 10 or 15 minute sessions.

IIRC, T-34s came in 3-tank platoons; 3 platoons plus 1 command tank (10 in all) made a company; 2 companies plus a command tank (21 in all) made a battalion.

Heavy tanks (KV-1s, JS-2s, et al) came in 2-tank platoons, and, I believe, 2 platoons plus a command tank (5 in all) made a company.

Don't know about light tanks (T-60 et al).

I think 4 SUs made a battery.

I'm building to Flames of War. They agree with you on medium tanks, but allow units of up to 7 heavy tanks…so I have 7 evil grin

So, Extra Crispy, when will we see these Soviet hordes in action on a table? IIRC correctly on FB you were asking about what game to run next. Why not go all Bagration on some unlucky Nazi butts and whet them in battle?

Cheers and good gaming.

Well, this completes my Soviet army – at least for now. Although I have a small handful of painted vehicles and a pack or two unpainted, these will have to wait. My initial goal of turning a motely collection into an organized, consistent force has been achieved. So that leaves me with a large German and Soviet army. I also have small UK and US armies that need the same treatment. But as those will require substantial new purchases, they are going to have to wait as I am pinching m hobby pennies for the remainder of the year after a large purchase of Kallistra Hexon terrain tiles last month!

At some point I'll do a glamour shot of the entire collection.
