… do you put into the majority of your figures? (If you layer.)

1) Shade and a base
2) Shade a base and a highlight
3) Some combination – like faces get #2, boots get #1.
4) 4 or more
5) ?

[Edit – Perhaps we should assume 25/28mm so as to not infinitely divide the results.]

repaint13 Feb 2017 6:06 a.m. PST

it depends on scale
6mm 2 layers
15mm 3 layers
28mm 4 layers

Generally one layer…I'm happy to get stuff painted to my wargaming standard.

freerangeegg13 Feb 2017 6:19 a.m. PST

Mostly option 4

daler240D13 Feb 2017 6:25 a.m. PST

depends on scale, but never more than 3.

2 or sometimes 2+wash.

Vigilant13 Feb 2017 6:51 a.m. PST

28mm figures 4, shade, base, highlight and ink wash.

whitphoto13 Feb 2017 7:29 a.m. PST

Base wash highlight. Sometimes even decals!

Martian Root Canal13 Feb 2017 7:52 a.m. PST

Generally 3-4 layers, sometimes more, depending on the figure and it's 'use'. Skirmish figures or character models get more; rank and file is generally 3-4.

The Beast Rampant13 Feb 2017 8:39 a.m. PST

Lining, shade, base, two to three highlights.

The Nigerian Lead Minister13 Feb 2017 9:05 a.m. PST

Usually two plus a wash.

3-4 sometimes more.

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP13 Feb 2017 9:24 a.m. PST

When painting AB figures, approximately 6 layers or more.

For example Austrian White..
boki.ee/Military_Uniforms/Uniforms_0003/Military.htm

When painting my own figures or 6-8mm figs, 3-4 layers.

And one big figure with 4 layers..

wrgmr113 Feb 2017 9:30 a.m. PST

Base plus 1 or 2 high lights. Sometimes 3.

dsfrank13 Feb 2017 12:00 p.m. PST

Base then highlight – then dip

5: Simple block painting, then The Dip. GEtGW quality (Good Enough to Game With) at arm's length. Cheers!

To paraphrase one of my friends on a painting day, troops in complete armor (e.g., Traveller battle dress or StarGrunt power armor) can be pretty easy: prime, base, wash, dry-brush, done!

I guess that's three layers, because dry-brushing isn't really a layer.

After the base, I usually apply some camouflage streaks or spots. I paint the weapons according to my color code, and usually paint some of the web gear or other equipment in colors close to the main camouflage scheme.

Bashytubits13 Feb 2017 1:52 p.m. PST

3 or 4 layers depending on the method I am using.

Weasel13 Feb 2017 1:58 p.m. PST

Undercoat, base paint, possibly a second layer if its anything yellow, then a wash and brush.

hungry yet?

4. Depends on the figures

– Primer (which is selected as a basecoat color)
– Base Paint

… then …

- highlight, wash
- wash, highlight
- highlight, wash, highlight

… also …

– I use ultra fine tip ink pens (mostly Sharpies) for irises in various colors and doing tattoos (and other miscellanea); the ink blends with (absorbs into) the paint instead of overcoating it, so I think that is a different "layer"

… and …

– always a sealant, but sometimes now using a matte sealant with gloss sealant on specific parts (which I think counts as a layer)

… plus rarely …

– two different color washes for different areas of the figure
– two or three layers of progressive highlighting, usually for incandescent things
– maybe a focused area metallic paint wash for light reflection of incandescent things

This would be more meaningful if my painting technique were better.

jeffreyw313 Feb 2017 4:30 p.m. PST

6mm Prime, base color, wash.
28mm Prime 4+ coats/washes.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP13 Feb 2017 8:31 p.m. PST

25/28?

Prime, base, wash, drybrush, matte. If I can prime in my coat color, I sometimes will.

Mike Target15 Feb 2017 3:04 a.m. PST

4 to 6 layers i suppose;

Primer
base colour
mid colour
Highlight
wash
varnish

Though i think most stuff only gets a highlight or a wash, and not both…

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP15 Feb 2017 5:54 a.m. PST

Main uniform gets 3-5. Most of the rest of the uniform get 2-3.
Face gets 4-6. Muskets barrel only gets one.

Anthropicus24 Feb 2017 11:36 a.m. PST

Depends on the scale. For 6mm:

Undercoat
Airbrush-applied basecoat/shading
Base color
Wash for skin
Blacklining
Highlighting
Sealer spray

15mm and up usually involves 2-6 more highlighting steps depending on the color.

Xintao24 Feb 2017 12:51 p.m. PST

Primer
Block Paint Base colors
Highlight
Wash
Blackline
Maybe a 2nd highlight
Seal

tkdguy24 Feb 2017 11:43 p.m. PST

Depends on the miniature. I'm more likely do paint more layers on hair and ornate clothing.
