I'm looking for some books to give me an introdution to the GNW. They would need to be in english. Basic history or short campaign studies. I'm thinking of starting this period but would like a little more information. Maybe some movie suggestions also. Thanks |

I recommend Robert K. Massie's "Peter the Great." The book has a great deal of information about The Great Northern War. |

Dan, I have a discussion about my current GNW project here. There are a few mentions on books (including the two good books mentioned to date) and rules considerations. rollaone.com/2016/09/19/towards-moscow-trilogy-tmt-part-1-overview Movies are limited but there is this one, The Sovereign's Servant (a Russian movie with the Battle of Poltava in the backdrop). Link here: imdb.com/title/tt0476695 There are some clips on YouTube from the Movie. All the best and welcome to the period! / Per |

A book on Sweden's key campaign against Russia in 1709. "The Battle That Shook Europe: Poltava and the Birth of the Russian Empire" link A great read with insight into how Sweden fought. |

Great Northern War Compendium is the book you are looking for, lots of discussion about it here at TMP and elsewhere. |

I have The Great Northern War Book 3: The Battles of the Great Northern War by Ken Torrin. Great detail for every battle broken into two categories; 1700 – 1705 and 1706 – 1715. Overview and background leading up to the war included. Bob |

Compendium is a must have. Got it last year and I keep reading it. Lots of eye candy to get you in the painting mood. I'm now reading Englund' s Poltova. It's nice but I'm unsure about the English translation. I'm tempted to get the original swedish to see if it's the translation or the book it self. |

Thanks for all the replies. I saw the Compendium but $125.00 USD is a bit much for a look at a period I'm still on the fence on. |
