I've been given some Victrix 28mm French line infantry sprues. Whilst prepping them i noticed the rear patch on the line grenadier bearskins has the grenade emblem. I've looked through all my uniform references and can only find the quartered rear patch, usually depicted red with a white cross. Am i right in thinking the grenade emblem was only found on old guard grenadier bearskins, or was it a variation found in line grenadiers too ? Is it a Victrix blooper ?
Apologies if this subject has been discussed previously.

Was on the guard infantry and artillery bearskins patch.

Rousselot's Napoleon's Army on page 230 says this about the bearskin for grenadiers of the guard, "The summit remained scarlet, but the cross of white braid that decorated it was replaced in 1808 by an embroidered white grenade."

Funcken's Napoleonic Wars, Part 2 on page 9 has an illustration that indicates the guard grenadier bearskin had a red patch with a white grenade emblem after 1807, but before 1807 it was a red patch with a white cross.

For my 1805-1807 Early French, I am use line grenadier from Brigade Games. They do not have the grenade emblem on the bearskin. The metal figures from Brigade Games are very compatible with the plastic Victrix figures.

in the early years they had the white cross on a red field, even blue and red field, could be that the grenade distinction was a feature for the line infantry in the later years

Hi vW. When you say 'later years' would that have meant the demise of the bearskin for grenadiers anyway ? I thought blockades by the royal navy resulted in canadian fur being rare, hence the adoption of the shako for line grenadiers(and carabiniers) ?

though the shako was officially adopted – one can find in contemporary picture manuscripts – like – Napoleon's Last Grande Armee 1813 – grenadiers with bearskin caps – and still in their old round lapels was well as long coat tails.
Those original battalions fitted with bearskin caps would have kept them in some units
