Interesting, thanks. Although the subject in one photo, "Samurai warrior, circa 1880." (4th from the bottom) looks to me more like an Ainu elder than a Samurai? |

1880 would have been just after the Boshin wars, when a lot of the unhappy samurai went north to Hokkaido and declared the Republic of Ezo. Though that one does look like he went a bit native. |

I think I had seen some of the original black-and-white pictures in books, but not these hand-coloured ones. I have done the link to my favourites as painting advise. Thank´s for sharing. Werner Elb |

I thought- based on the beard- he might have been of polynesian stock on one of the southern islands. |
