It's a hobby. Stop buying when you want to. Your call. WHAT?!? Why didn't anyone ever tell me this BEFORE? Oh… actually it doesn't work I bought two pdf's while I was writing this |

Yeah, Ushcha beat me to it Traj ! |
Trajanus | 13 Feb 2017 10:14 a.m. PST |
Yeah, good one Mike! ;o) Actually, I think maybe I should have asked if I should have stopped at just a couple of periods of interest. An enquiring mind is an expensive distraction! ;o) There again I look at all those other figures and rules that are available these days, that I wouldn't play if you paid me and think I'm letting myself off lightly! |

It's time to stop buying new rules when you're NOT gaming in the period anymore. I've had this happen several times. |
1968billsfan | 13 Feb 2017 8:27 p.m. PST |
Here is the obvious easy answer. [1] pick a period [2] ask me what the best rule set is [3] buy it and burn other sets [4] bliss and happiness. |
Asterix | 14 Feb 2017 9:07 a.m. PST |
I'll stop when the perfect set is published. |

Trajanus: Time, money, and space have conspired against me regarding expanding my war gaming interest into other periods. Almost everything in the horse and musket era I find, has appeal for me. It is only because of the limiting factors above that I have not branched out into other wars of the time. John Miller |

Actually, there IS a correct answer to this. A person should stop buying new rules approximately the 8 hours after the death certificate is signed. Now you know. No charge. |
Henry Martini | 16 Feb 2017 5:32 p.m. PST |
Isn't reflexively buying unnecessary new rule sets one of the diagnostic indicators for brain death? |

I think I am a rules junkie and know that I am a wargaming butterfly. I have been like this for close on 50 years and although I have dropped certain periods altogether I still find new ones having just started AWI. It's too late to change now and I see no reason to do so. Ours is a hobby otherwise known as a pastime so if it feels good why stop? I gave up the search for the Grail some time ago, but good luck to those who want to keep searching, just don't expect me to go with you :-) |

Right after you have bought Combat Command… (But that hasn't even stopped me, the designer, from buying more rules…) Thomas J. Thomas Fame and Glory Games |

ANSWER: NOW! There is but one true set of horse and musket rules! WRG 1685-1845. '79ed. All Else Is Heresy! |
Trajanus | 18 Feb 2017 1:41 p.m. PST |
Er, yeah. Bought those 40 years ago! Both me and the World have moved on since then! |
jwebster | 19 Feb 2017 3:24 p.m. PST |
@op Simple – you need new rules to go with the new figures that you just added to the lead mountain John |
Trajanus | 20 Feb 2017 4:47 a.m. PST |
It's worse than that, these days people have plastic mountains too! |

When you realise you haven't actually played any of the last six sets you bought! And when you realise you just can't be bothered to wade through pages and pages of explanations, examples, tables and charts to learn a new game that probably won't be significantly better than the one you presently play and enjoy – and might even be worse! |
gpruitt | 21 Feb 2017 12:28 p.m. PST |
Last year I sold a big stack of rules on ebay that I may or may not have ever actually played. Once I got honest with myself, I knew I never would play any of them again. So out they went. I am so glad that I did – the proceeds enabled me to buy a new army of figures! Now what rules will I use for those new figs?… |
Henry Martini | 21 Feb 2017 5:06 p.m. PST |
How about one of the sets you just sold? |
Whirlwind | 16 Mar 2017 8:59 p.m. PST |
Never, it is always possible a better rules set will come along; plus, the understanding of the history – and perhaps, the understanding of warfare – upon which these rules are based may change and improve too. That said, I certainly wouldn't buy every new set that comes along; only ones that look a lot better than anything that I currently play/own. |

Winston Smith, You only tinket if you don't get it right. Since 2008 not really done much to them. A couple of issues when we went to 1/144 that did not really get to be an issue in 1/72. We did sort of re-write the infantry a bit for WW2 but colour not fundamantal stuff. Mind you 2000 hrs as a stater we were faily through. Still got an engineering manual to do but thats not a tinkering its more a completely different set of what to enginee and time and resource planning. So no time to stop buying rulea ;-). |
IUsedToBeSomeone | 22 Mar 2017 3:32 a.m. PST |
I have just had a big clearout of rules that I no longer play and no longer have the space for. I have decided to cut down on periods and stick to a set of rules for each period and actually PLAY the games rather than planning them all the time. Sticking to The Portable Wargame and One Hour Wargames Scenarios for 19th Century and Colonial has certainly improved the number of games I've got in and the experience. Mike |
arthur1815 | 22 Mar 2017 6:26 a.m. PST |
Me too! Although I daresay I will be tempted to purchase the odd set in future for my favourite periods… |
