I'm painting a regiment of Austrian hussars and using von Pivka's "Armies of the Napoleonic Era" What's throwing me is the sentence "In 1802 all dolman, pelisse and breeches became light blue…" is that right, or does he mean 1812?

Indeed. Austrian Hussars stayed a multi-coloured bunch until at least 1848.

Ok, I might step on some toes here, but I think you should be careful to use that book as a reference for painting minis… I ended up with a full regiment of Duchy of Warzaw Hussars in ADC uniforms after following it…That beeing said, it is a nice book, nice color pictures and "Von Pivka" knows his history for sure, but maybe not all the details of the eras uniforms equally well..:)

There's been quite a bit of research since Digby's opus first appeared. Fortunately, the Web is here as well. :)

for sure – Austrian hussars kept their multi colour outlook throught the Napoleonic wars

AIUI (from Rawkins) hussar uniforms were as follows in our period:

Regt / Name / Shako / Dolman+Pelisse / Breeches / Buttons
No.1 / Kaiser / Black / Dark blue / Dark blue / Brass
No.2 / Erzherzog Josef Anton / Red / Light blue / Light blue / Brass
No.3 / Erzherzog Ferdinand Carl D'Este / Pike grey / Dark blue / Dark blue / Brass
No.4 / Vecsey (1801 Hesse-Homburg) / Light blue / Mid-green / Poppy red / White
No.5 / Ott / Bright red / Dark green / Crimson / White metal

I always think dark blue looks British and red or red/green looks French, but there are only so many possible combinations.

Thanks guys. I know von Pivka is out of date but most of my armies are already painted and I don't see any reason to pick up a new tome only to find out what I did wrong 30 years ago. Nice that the hussars are in different uniforms.
