Work has commenced on the last formation of troops in the Talavera project with General Bassecourt's 5th Infantry Division and this the first battalion of the first regiment of Spanish Marines.
For those looking for a flag to use with this unit I have provided a copy of it in the post that can be saved by clicking on it. If you would like to know more then just follow the link to JJ's link Jonathan |

Stunning as always :) I like how you did the bearskins I think that a better translation is sea battalion. These weren't just marines, but sailors put into service as infantry after the Navy was destroyed by Nelson John |

@jwebster Not sure I agree with you about the translation. Marines or perhaps Naval infantry but not sea battalion. Where did you get your information from? The Spanish Marine Infantry (Cuerpo de Infanterķa de Marina) is the oldest marine infantry in the world, created by Carlos I on 27 February 1537, so they existed long before "the Navy was destroyed by Nelson". In 1800 they had 12000 men, and still had 12000 men in 1806 after Trafalgar. On 2 December 1806, with the advent of peace with Great Britain, the number of battalions was reduced from 12 to 4. keithbarker beat me to it! Even when it is documented as being the oldest marine corps in the modern world, I have to read of it in fact being …"a sea battalion". Curious. |
