Do you find games that require a 6' by 4' playing area to be too large? |
Syrinx0 | 08 Feb 2017 6:36 a.m. PST |
Depends on the game and scale. We often play our WWII 28mm games on a large 10x8 surface (two tables joined). Our ancients battles usually only use a 6x4 area. |
21eRegt | 08 Feb 2017 6:44 a.m. PST |
Anything smaller isn't worth setting up IMHO. Especially with 28mm figures. |
Joes Shop | 08 Feb 2017 6:45 a.m. PST |
No, my table is 6' x 4'. I have an insert that slots into the top of it which provides an 8' x 5' (if needed). |

Saga plays on a 3 foot by 4 foot board. 2 hours of pure joy await every game. |

To me that is just getting started. Most games I play have a ground scale, usually 50-100m per inch. At 100m per inch that gets you a 7x5 km box to work in. Room for a few of Divisions, maybe a two Corps on the attack played across the long edge. For more modern games at the same ground scale it is room for a Regiment or Brigade played on the short edge (depth being more an issue post WW-1) |
nickinsomerset | 08 Feb 2017 6:57 a.m. PST |
Our club games are usually 6 x 4, at home I have a 12 x 6, Tally Ho! |
20thmaine | 08 Feb 2017 7:00 a.m. PST |
6 x 4 is the largest table I can manage at home. |
Extra Crispy | 08 Feb 2017 7:01 a.m. PST |
I have a 6x9. A 4x6 always feels cramped but is acceptable for smaller skirmish games. |
vtsaogames | 08 Feb 2017 7:05 a.m. PST |
Like 20thmaine, 6 X 4 is the largest table in my place. |
JonFreitag | 08 Feb 2017 7:06 a.m. PST |
Nope. My game table is 12' x 6'. |

I can make a 4x7 table, (tho I have no room for it as of today) But I dream of a 6x9. |
Jcfrog | 08 Feb 2017 7:23 a.m. PST |
Way too small, most of the time. Flanks , rear , repeat. In a couple of months two praralell permanent tables 4.5x1.5 m |
Ragbones | 08 Feb 2017 7:27 a.m. PST |
My current set-up is 6 x 7 1/2. I look forward to adding another table and going up to 6 x 10 next year when the game room moves from the basement to the main living area. Some games require less and that's easily accommodated. |
Tom Reed | 08 Feb 2017 7:28 a.m. PST |
My table at home is a 5x7. |

Yes. My home table is 5' x 3.5'. But, I play either 28mm Skirmish or 6mm Battles, so it is not much of an issue. The table edges on a 6 x 4 are not that critical in my mind when playing those types of games. |
rustymusket | 08 Feb 2017 7:39 a.m. PST |
I rarely have played on anything less than 4 X 8. I would not want to play a 28mm game on less than 6 X 4 and preferably larger. I want the field to look as realistically sized as possible. |

I've got an 8' x 5' table. I've found the the 6' x 4' mats that I now use are more than adequate for 15mm. I'd still use the full table for 28mm. |
PiersBrand | 08 Feb 2017 8:10 a.m. PST |
Ive settled on a 7 x 5 for the studio. Nice size, easy to get around and reach across and the added benefit that players find it hard to guess ranges… ;) |
Onomarchos | 08 Feb 2017 8:12 a.m. PST |
Yes, I live in a small place now and only have a 3x4 table. |
PrivateSnafu | 08 Feb 2017 8:16 a.m. PST |
Totally depends on the game and scale. I really like playing Flames of War on Bouncers 5x9 table. 5 foot is my limit of comfort for table width. Beyond that reaching a bit too far for my comfort. Height matters too. Lower tables can be wider as its easier to reach. |

No. Generally speaking, I like a large table. |
robert piepenbrink | 08 Feb 2017 8:26 a.m. PST |
I prefer a 4x6 or even a 6x12. But you can have a perfectly adequate game using 20-28mm castings on a 4x4, and for skirmishes even a 3x3 will do. With microscale, you can get a satisfactory game even on a 2x2 table--but how often are you so cramped you can't find room for a card table? |
Winston Smith | 08 Feb 2017 8:37 a.m. PST |
I play on a 9x5 table. So 6x4 would be cramped for me. |
McKinstry | 08 Feb 2017 8:38 a.m. PST |
No. I don't really go with anything smaller. |
zoneofcontrol | 08 Feb 2017 8:42 a.m. PST |
For me, 6 x 4 would normally be the desired size. Some scenarios would work on slightly smaller but most would be on a 6 x 4. |
Shagnasty | 08 Feb 2017 8:53 a.m. PST |
I'm with Winston Smith. 6 x 4 is cramped for 15's and 28mm skirmish in my view. |
warwell | 08 Feb 2017 9:05 a.m. PST |
Yes. I play games on my coffee table – approximately 2' x 3' available |
etotheipi | 08 Feb 2017 9:07 a.m. PST |
Depends on the game. There are a lot of factors such as figure size, number of figures, engagement and movement ranges, anticipated scenario flow (# of turns for certain strategic decision points to be reached), and the amount of space you actually have. To name a few. My dinner table (usual vuenue) is 3'+ x 6'+ (both leafs out) with ~6" radius rounded corners. I had a fold out wargame "table" that I built into a Rose Art plastic case for gaming on airplane flights. |
DisasterWargamer | 08 Feb 2017 9:20 a.m. PST |
4 x 8 here – mostly 15mm – but the living floor if I bring our the 54mms |
Martin Rapier | 08 Feb 2017 9:31 a.m. PST |
6x4 is about as big as I go these days. More commonly 4x4 or 3x4. I prefer to sit down to play as leaning over a big table just wrecks my back. And that means a smaller table. |
wrgmr1 | 08 Feb 2017 9:31 a.m. PST |
Most of our group has 6'x12' with one 6'x18' monster. |
steamingdave47 | 08 Feb 2017 9:44 a.m. PST |
Depends on scale, rules etc. Had excellent games on a 2x2, on 6x4 and on a 10x5, even played on 40 x 25 (with gaps to reach table centre). |
redmist1122 | 08 Feb 2017 9:47 a.m. PST |
Not too big. about 95% of the games I host are on a table of 6' X 5'…that's the size of two folding tables I got from Costco when placed side by side. P. |
Doug MSC | 08 Feb 2017 9:57 a.m. PST |
Any size table is fine as long as your having fun. That said, a 6'x 4' would work for smaller figures or larger skirmish type games. I started out with a 6'x 4' table because that's all I had room for in a spare bedroom in the apt. I was living in. We had many a fun game on it. But as time went on, and now that I have my own home, I have a 5'x 15'Table and I enjoy it very much. So, no matter what size my table was, I had great fun playing games with my friends! |
Frederick | 08 Feb 2017 10:21 a.m. PST |
Does depend on the game but we almost always game with 6 X 4 or larger; usually 8 X 6 for our multi-player games; reaching over the table not usually a problem given that people are typically on one part of the table or another |
Snowydog | 08 Feb 2017 10:37 a.m. PST |
6x4 is fairly standard for me. Some rules require a smaller area (e.g. RFCM rules tend to use 5x3). Nice to play on larger (8x6) when available. Beyond this size of tables then games need to be multi-player affairs. |
20thmaine | 08 Feb 2017 10:39 a.m. PST |
I have a 6x9. A 4x6 always feels cramped but is acceptable for smaller skirmish games.
I wouldn't mind a bigger table – but 6x4 can offer more than a skirmish – most of the skirmish games I play are on 3 x 3 or similar. Depends on figure scale of course, and move/range distances |
Bill Rosser | 08 Feb 2017 10:47 a.m. PST |
I'm with Redmist1122. 6'x 5' (2-tables sided by side). Plenty of space for 15mm figures. |
martin goddard | 08 Feb 2017 10:52 a.m. PST |
I plan all my games to use less than 6x4 so that there is access to the game for the maximum number of players (easier to find a 5x3 table in a house than a 12x ?. Of course games can often be enlarged more easily than shrunk. Smaller than 6x4 allows players to sit down and still reach the whole table. Smaller tables are more easily populated with scenery. |
Texas Jack | 08 Feb 2017 11:09 a.m. PST |
In my gameroom I have an 8x5, which I use mostly with 1/72nd stuff. I wouldn´t mind going longer, but I find that the 5 feet width is about maximum for reach. 6x4 wouldn´t be terrible, but I would probably play with fewer figures. |
FusilierDan | 08 Feb 2017 11:09 a.m. PST |
To answer the question no. 3x4 or 4x6 seems to be the standard size used in most games I play. Never too large. |
daler240D | 08 Feb 2017 11:39 a.m. PST |
actually, that's a good size for me. just right. |
MajorB | 08 Feb 2017 12:00 p.m. PST |

Tacitus | 08 Feb 2017 12:17 p.m. PST |
Table? No. Play area? Yes, because it has to fit on my table alongside notes, dice, rulers, templates, rules, chips, and drinks. |
