G'Day Gents Perhaps someone here may be able to help me. I am seeking the name of a game we used to play in the 70s. It was a world that metal was in short supply…so most swords were of leather. Thieves and wizards were plentiful…and plenty of ins… Depending upon your status…would depend upon the road you would walk – ride on…I think there were three road levels… I remember that it was was similar to dungeons and dragons…a role playing game. Thanks Best Regards Art |

Tekumel. 70s would be Empire of the Petal Throne. Those are the sakbe roads you're thinking of, and chlen-hide equipment. |

There were also five novels published by the creator of the world M.A.R. Barker The first one Man of Gold is available on Amazon Kindle for a buck. It is well worth the read. link Miniatures are available again through the Tekumel Project. thetekumelproject.blogspot.com |

How is a sword made of leather? Wouldn't you just use wood, stone/obsidian, or bone? |

G'Day Gents Thank you very much ! …and I take it…that it's still played today ! I remember spending weekends at night in the garage with the ole gang playing this game… Again…many thanks for all the information !! Mike…as for why a sword was made of leather…ahhh…it has been years since I played the game…surely others are more qualified to answer that question. I just recall we all tried to work our way to get a metal sword…and try and walk on the roads we were not permitted to walk on ;-) Best Regards Art |

Beast The leather is Chlen treated hide which ends up being about as hard as bronze. Chlen are similar to a triceratops and are the only domesticated animals available for transportation. Elite units do have iron and even steel weapons but due to their military uses and scarcity these metals are more valuable than gold. The planet that the game is set on was teraformed as a pleasure world but civilization collapsed when the solar system was sucked into a pocket dimension where magic works. Civilization had to re evolve. Art Yep. There were a few Tekumel related miniature games at last year's Historicon. A pleasure to help Kyle |
