A write up of our 1680 game using Bob's Arabs and English. WE used the Pike and Shotte rules which seemed to work okay. Hope you enjoy. abcwargamers.blogspot.co.uk |

Interesting aar. Never thought of actually playing a game set in that location, although I knew about the British regiments in Tangiers. As for dealing with that Arab cavalry, British at this period still had a substantial proportion of pikes, (25% or more), so a " hedgehog" would have seen them off – perhaps!!! |

Hi steamingdave 47 you are right, Colonel Walton makes the point that in 1686 "the Foot-Guards were ordered to be armed throughout with bayonets, of course excepting the pikemen." So there are still pikes in the regiments at that period and the Guards in this game have pikes. It appears the plug bayonet or "Short Daggers" were issued to the Fort at Tangiers in 1663. They were issued to regiments at home in 1673 and then the issue ceased. They were reissued as above and in 1692/3 sword bayonets began to be issued. Grenadiers had carried bayonets from the first Of the English regiments in the game, 2 had pike units in the classic ECW 2 muskets per pikeman. I just managed to face the Arab heavy cavalry with a unit without pikes! Clever of me! |

Sounds as if you have the same tactical skills as I do! Still, it entertains the opposition. Had not realised plug bayonets were issued so early to British troops, I thought the French were the early adopters around 1670. They were obviously found wanting if issue was discontinued for a while. |
