Hi all! Does anyone know which regiment formed a guard for Cornwallis during the Southern Campaign? If he had one, that is Thanks! |

I look forward to hearing an actual researched answer. I would guess as Cornwallis was the Colonel of the 33rd Foot, maybe from there? |

When you say a "guard" do you mean similar to the etat-major formed for French generals during the (French) Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars? If so, then I fear you are going to be disappointed; the British Army did not usually form such units, but might have a few dragoons or whatever as orderlies (which could include bodyguarding duties as and when needed, but was primarily for distributing orders etc). There is a part of Lamb's memoirs, whilst serving with the 33rd in the South, where he mentions saving Cornwallis's life because the general was wandering about on his own and unprotected. |

More of an escort, than guard, would probably be a better term. I was thinking the 33rd, or maybe a couple of 17th L.D. troopers, or troopers from Tarleton's dragoons. I was looking at having some foot or mounted troops on his command base, as apposed to just staff officers. |

Wasn't sergeant Robert Lamb with the 23rd Royal Welch Fusiliers? |

Yes, sorry I meant 23rd not 33rd. |

Lamb was with the 9th, then later the 23d after escaping from the Convention Army. He came across Cornwallis after they attacked the 2d Rebel line at Guilford. |

I want to say there is a reference in "Fatal Sunday" as to what composed Clinton's guard, but I just packed the book away for some remodeling going on in my place. |

On pages 306-308 there are references to him having a guard of dragoons (presumably from the 16th, as they were in the area). This would be as expected anyway, as they would be of use as messengers; it would be difficult to have an entire troop, as this would leave the squadrons uneven, but possibly there were one or two men drawn from each of the six mounted troops, as would be normal for any sort of "guard" in those times? |
