Here are some pics from the beginning of my solo playtest of Rorke's Drift in preparation for running the game in a couple weeks. I'm using an easy and fun set of rules created by Bill Molyneaux of the Gettysburg Area Gamers. There are 100 British defenders and 150 Zulu attackers divided into 5 ibuthu of 30 figures each. Movement is by area. The British post is divided into four areas: the hospital area; the storehouse area; the 'courtyard' area between the hospital and the storehouse; and the small stone kraal. The playing surface outside the British post is divided into 10 areas which are defined by lines of flocking. The game consists of three Zulu assault phases. In the first turn of each phase, each of the five ibuthu must start in different areas but in subsequent turns they can move into areas occupied by another ibuthu.

My strategy for the first of three Zulu assault phases was to hit the British along the broadest front hoping to inflict as many casualties as possible. At the same time, I knew the amabuthu would be subjected to the maximum British firepower.

The Zulus suffered significant casualties from the initial British volleys but when they stormed the mealie bag and stone walls the British defenders started falling quickly. The small cattle kraal became a charnel house for the British, losing ten defenders in the first two turns!

Zulu loses quickly mounted and three of the five ibuthu routed. Meanwhile, the British evacuated the stone kraal and reinforced the defenders in front of the storehouse. Fierce fighting continued on the barricades around the storehouse until finally the last two remaining Zulu units broke.

The British suffered 31 casualties in the first Assault Phase. However, since they retained both the Hospital and Storehouse areas the British were able to 'recover' 9 figures for the next Assault Phase.
More to follow.

Very nice battle report! What make are your figures?

The British are predominantly Mike Models with a few "I don't knows" thrown in. Most of the Zulus are Naismith but there are some Mike's Models, too.
