Years…. oh heck… decades ago I saw a little bit of a sci fi movie where if I remember right some people on an island were real concerned about these aliens that took the form of shimmering columns of light. My memory says they looked a lot like scratches on the negatives of the movie. I remember one scene with three of them in the water rounding a cape or something like that. Any clues? Or is this just a daft memory.

radiation beings? black and white? british? there is a sci fi movie where the creatures were made by 'scratching' / 'poking holes' in the film dont remember the name

A vague memory of the star of the film looking out across a bay and there are shimmering lights which were the aliens. The film I am talking about was some time in the late 50s/early 60d.

Not The Flesh Eaters….TNE you were closer the first time. My most vivid memory of this is of a couple of the people (hiding in a cave) trying to remain unnoticed as several of these aliens pass by. The aliens were off-shore, and were each about 50" high and made up of shimmering effect that could have been scratches on the film. As each passed by they made some sort of deep industrial electrical noise. It does seem to be in my memory as late 50's early 60's and Black and White but I could be wrong on that.

Pretty sure it was Foes -- used to watch it on WSBK channel 38 in Boston. It's so obscure that there's little on the web about it, not even a copy on Youtube. :( I could watch it again -- it's that bad.
