If they pick a female lead, does the side kick need to be a eye candy guy? Guy from Merlin or the guy from Penny Dreadful are my bets. Still I am a Yank. |

I'd rather see a spinoff show with a female timelord than regenerating the character as a woman. Had gender bending been established early in the lore, I wouldn't have an issue with it, but going from 13 doctors who were male to suddenly female smacks of doing so simply as a stunt, which wouldn't be fair to any actress who was given the role. Of the candidates, my personal favorites are Richard Aoyade (he's my first choice- would love to see him in the role), Tim Roth, and Andrew Scott. |

Will it be a ginger? Well that was unpleasant. |

My vote is for John Nettles, or Daniel Casey, of Midsomer Murders fame. |

Here's this - "According to bookmakers Ladbrokes, British actors Ben Whishaw, Richard Ayoade, Rory Kinnear and David Harewood are all in the running to take over the role." The first two seem too young to my eye. I agree that Tim Roth would be a good choice. |

I'm finding the modern Doctor Who to be a bit disappointing; not in terms of the actors (each of whom has done a great job presenting their own version of the Doctor) but with the stories that we get to see. The Eccleston Doctor that rejuvenated the series was excellent – he didn't win every single time. He screwed up. Sometimes he didn't screw up, but he still couldn't save the day. When he triumphed in the episode from the Blitz ('everybody gets to live!') it was wonderful, because so often the show had minor characters dying by the bucketload. Then the Tennant Doctor came along, and he didn't lose. Then the Smith Doctor came along, and the Doctor was no longer merely God-like, he was actually a God – omniscient, infallible. The scale of the show has escalated so that every episode is of world-shaking significance. I'm not worried about who they choose to play the Doctor – whoever they pick will be good. I want to see a return to a more modest level of adventure, but I'm not sure they can do that since the canon of the omnipotent Doctor has been so thoroughly established. I'll still keep watching, however, no matter where they go with it. |

Quite right ! The scripts have been getting worse by the series…… it's the writers! The new Dr should be a relative "unknown" actor like when Tom baker took over. |

I think it might be David Harewood, Sacha Dhawan or Richard Ayoade and Emma Watson as the doctor???? |

I'm with willthepiper about the episodes just going back to smaller scale disasters to navigate through |

Well that was unpleasant. Really? I think you may have missed the reference: Aww, I wanted to be ginger. I've never been ginger. (David Tennant's Doctor, on re-generation) Had gender bending been established early in the lore, I wouldn't have an issue with it It was established with Missy, of course, but that's relatively recent. |

Stephen Fry, he needs a new gig now that he has left QI. Laurie could play the master. |
Hey You | 31 Jan 2017 1:22 p.m. PST |
After some thought, I agree with Gunfreak. Stephen Fry would make a great Doctor. |
John Treadaway | 31 Jan 2017 2:47 p.m. PST |
I think you may have missed the reference Yep – you're right: I did. Two wrong's don't make a right, however. When you know people who have been the victims of a hate crime based on their hair colour (as I do) it's something that I just wouldn't say (or repeat). It does seem that "the 'G' word" is now the one '…ism' that society still deems 'acceptable' (when all the others have been rightfully banished). Sorry for being 'over sensitive'. John T |

I agree with with Will too. The new episodes are worth watching once only. I'd like to see Richard Ayoade but think that nerdy geek type has been done enough already. Andy Serkis could be interesting as I enjoyed his portrayal of Ian Drury. Stephen Fry I like also but think he's too well known. |

From that list, Andrew Scott. From my wish list, Michael Caine. From left field, Justin Bieber. I mean, c'mon … it's kinda like the idea attacking Russia in the winter. Eventually it's gotta work for someone sometime. Right? I think he's "due". |

I don't have a particular preference but would lean towards a younger doctor, after Garibaldi. Stephen Fry would be amazing though. What about the guy who plays Dorian Grey in Penny Dreadful? |
Hafen von Schlockenberg | 01 Feb 2017 1:12 p.m. PST |
How about Hugh Laurie? "House" persona, natural accent. His "Bertie Wooster" persona might be interesting. . . |

Richard Ayoade or Hayley Atwell, easily. And I would pick Hugh Laurie for the Master. |

I agree with Tgerritsen that it would be too abrupt to have a female Dr. Who after a series of 13 men--there should be a transitional character like Eddie Izzard. |
Gennorm | 22 Feb 2017 2:59 a.m. PST |
Philip Glennister playing the Dr exactly as he played DCI Gene Hunt. |

I'm no Dr. Who expert. I couldn't tell you who the best Dr. was, or offer a good suggestion for a new one. All I know is that hands-down, the best actor ever to play the Master was the great Eric Roberts. This is indisputable. (I have unfurled my umbrella. Pelt me all you want with your spoiled vegetables! I am defiant!) |
