As totally newbie in Napoleonic games, I think I start with skirmishes. For a start Song of Drums and Shakos, next building up forces to full Sharpes Prctices. For Spanish Guerillas I found Frontranks minis. For British, Perry 95th rifles looks good. But what for French ? I looked at plastic boxes but most of them are in standing position, not the best for skirmishes ? Any recommendations ? |

Gringos40 do a few skirmishing types; link Calpe are all marching Perry FN30 series might do, but, other than Retreat from Moscow, they are also marching style largely Front Rank do the most animated poses, but in stocky figures; link Brigade Miniatures do that new set of Sharpe Characters. Well worth a look for skirmishing. Awaiting mine and I would suspect outdo even the Perry offerings (suspect….) |

you will be manipulating the figures a lot… and will soon discover that at 28mm, standing miniatures are not sooo bad. ;) |

Perry FN 7, 8, 13, 30, 31, 32, 33, and 75 should give you plenty of French variety to which you can add wounded, mounted officers etc. etc. |

Front rank are much bigger than Perry so could look a little odd on the table. |

Might you let us know what scale you are using? With Spanish and British, you are doing Peninsular War units, and need the pre-Bardin, pre-1812 rig. Perry in 28mm makes a nice set of voltigeurs or grenadiers standing. in skirmisher mode – loading and firing. With the musket, one needed to move quickly, load quickly, and rushing from cover to cover. Victix also make the earlier French, even with bicorn for the earliest times, with kneeling figures as you seem to prefer. I did a voltigeur, kneeling, musket held in the left hand at the balance, looking to his right, with his right arm raised, bolding the bicorn as though signaling. Another voltigeur in shako can be done reaching back to the cartridge pouch, left arm holding the muskt at the balance – or also with "trail arm" cut in the front of the elbow, and glued into a 90 degree angle, musket on the ground with bayonet up near the plume – protection for the fragile bayonets. Victrix advancing and standing figures can also be used in skirmishes: They usually had to advance to contact, or into ambush. Figures from the 65th de Ligne and others from Victrix plastics: TMP link Look down through the thread to see pictures of simple conversions. The figure on the left with odd Spanish-like bearskin, brown coat, green facings is meant to replicate a soldier of "Companie des bon tireurs," anti-guerrilla unit, of the 88th Line. The second figure wears a surtout common to the French dragoons, and is perhaps an elite company man who joined with a line unit after losing his mount, working to rejoin his unit. GdeP |

The Brigade games minis are outstanding – the detail on the locks on the muskets is particularly good. For the French many of the line are marching, but the Voltiguers and Gendarmes work very nicely. I have a bunch on my painting table for our Cold Wars game. A nice feature for skirmishing is that the Dragoons have nice skirmishing dismounts. I have dismounted Hussars from Steve Barber. ON the allied side the new Brigade Rifles are very nice – slightly superior to the Perry IMHO. Also in the brigade pipeline are dismounted skirmishing British Light Dragoons. I do mix the Front rank, Perry and Brigade Guerillas. If you are trying to fill out large numbers of French, the Victrix work nicely. I have both versions of Sharpe Practice and I find parts of it brilliant, but it leaves me flat overall. We will be modifying Chosen Men for the convention game. I do work as a helper monkey for Brigade at the conventions |

Old Glory must be mentioned. Here is just a sample (from mostly) advancing in campaign dress. There are firing, defending, charging and energetic ones too in varying levels of uniformity and wear and tear. Plus the prices can't be beat.
