Any decent one or two book purchase to make for a military/gamers guide to the Carlist wars?

Interested in things that focus mainly on the military aspects though.

This is a good start from the Perrys:

That looks quite promising!

You won't be disappointed. Don't overlook The Carlist Wars in Spain by Edgar Holt. Although it was written fifty years ago as a general history, it's a solid account of both wars and their legacy. I would strongly recommend reading it, along with the Perry publication, for fuller context.

The Perry book is great. Also check this out.

You're very welcome. What scale are you thinking of doing?

Weasel27 Jan 2017 2:56 p.m. PST

My go-to is always 15mm so I can start with skirmishing and then work up, but I have been itching to do a bunch of 2mm or 3mm armies as well as a side project.

The new QRF Carlist War 15mm range is pretty good imo, only infantry so far but the releases keep coming.

Weasel28 Jan 2017 3:26 p.m. PST

Nice, I dig QRF in general, so I'll have to look for those.

Recent book I read about the Crimean War described the Carlist wars as proxy wars between the liberal and authoritarian European powers. That's why Britain allowed the British Legion to recruit freely.

Not that unlike the Spanish Civil War.

Vincent, that is a bad interpretation. The "conservative-authoritarian" states never really cared. Don Carlos received no real help from Austria, or Russia. The Miquelite Wars in Portugal are a more apt example, and again, the Russians and Austrians were not greatly interested in supporting Don Carlos.

Indeed that author mixes his wars up. The British Legion paled in comparison to the open and aggressive intervention by Palmerston in the Portuguese Miquelite War. But in the case of Spain he was afraid that too overt a British intervention would legitimate an also overt French intervention by the new regime of Louis-Phillip that hated the guts of Don Carlos. Palmerston partly saw the Carlist War a s chance to eradicate the French influence in Spain, that had become dominant by the 1823 intervention. He thus eschewed direct intervention as in Portugal, permitting only economic support and the volunteer BAL. This also forced France to not attempt a direct intervention against Don Carlos.

Austria never questions British supremacy in Spain-Portugal in this period. In return the British never questioned Austrian supremacy in Italy. Russia talked, but that was all. The world until 1848 was "nicely" divided between the liberal-authoritarians and the conservative-authoritarians.

BTW The 1st Carlist War is our current theme in the 19th Century Warfare and Wargames FB group.
